Can i flip my ramp???

Postby pitbullluvajrod » Thu Apr 04, 2013 8:11 pm

Hello everyone, how are y'all doin? My question today is... has anyone flipped there ramp on their cargo, or is it even a mod that can be done? This is something I'm thinking would be handy. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Anything is possible. I speculate that you are thinking about moving the hinge point to the top. The main problem I would think of is the weight. The ramp is heavy. It is constructed to support a the weight of just about anything you can fit in the door. I would hate to have to lift it up. If you rebuilt the frame out of something light weight like alluminum would make it more do-able.

Dadgum it! I cut that board 5 times and it's still too short!

That was my thought as well. I figured I would have to put the ramp on a serious weight loss program. My other thought was a 3way barn door, like the rear of an Astro van. Top lifts, bottom swings on each side. The issue with that is latches. I want to start from the galley forward, Is that a mistake? Thanks for any opinions.

I've pondered a little different idea. How about completely replacing the rear doors, whether ramp or barn, with a non-opening rear wall. The reason is to make of so that I can fit it with either a rear rv door or a very large window. I envision a lightweight aluminum framed wall with a flange to seal it around the edges. Just thinking.

Thats the beauty of all this. Its your toy! Play with it how you want. As long as its structurally sound GO FOR IT!! I have seen the wall done before and it worked great for them. Have not seen the converted reverse split multi-swing ramp though. Sounds interesting. It should work fine. There are many different ways to latch it. Just off the top of my head I would lean towards drop pins like on cattle trailers.

It's a pretty good idea if you don't need the ramp--once you flip it up it is an instant awning!

I built this truck a few years back, and the overhead door was awesome. You can't see it in this photo, but the truck has a galley that pulls out underneath the bed. We could pull up to a campsite in the rain and be cooking in minutes.

Thanks, guys... I appreciate your opinions. In response to the use of the ramp, I have none. I've considered removing it completely and starting fresh. The idea was as you said, instant awning. The truck with the slide out is nice.. Again, I thank youfor the opinions.
