Roly: I am glad this is just a hoax. When I read this I felt my heart drop for you. :NC

When my wife Terry read it she just said "What a Wiener!" :frightened:

I started out feeling bad, then was a bit ticked off that you swerved. I've picked up more bodies on the road because they over reacted than if they would have just hit the deer, 'coon, or in this stories case, a tire.

But in the end, great fools day joke!

Hi Roly

Yep, I live just down the street from you off of Newport. Thanks for the invite, I would like to stop by and see your new build sometime and kick the tear drop tires. :)

The prankiness of Roly's post aside, as a professional driver I can say he brings up some good points. Big truck tires can fail with lethal force. You would be well advised to stay well clear of the sides of a truck, as confirmed by Mythbusters. http://mythbustersresults.com/episode80
If you are going to pass a truck, pass like you mean it, and get well away. I work hard to operate safely, but when I lose a tire, I'm just as surprised by it as you are. Every couple of months I have one that goes off like a bomb. Behind a truck is safer, so long as you aren't too close, but if the truck is going slower than you'd like, don't creep in close. Go ahead and pass and get clear.

I agree ... and make sure you're well ahead before pulling in front of them. They'll appreciate it.

Granted, I'm pretty sure that I don't put on the miles that you do, but in 19 years of commercial driving I've never had one go off like a bomb. Flat, yes, loose chunks of rubber, a couple of times, all kinds of lumps & odd bumps, yes, but explode?! not yet, knock on wood. And all of our tires are by contract from the lowest bidder.

The past month I have had two truck tires blow out side walls. But then I don't do highway driving with them.
