Hi from Dillsburg Pensultucky

Postby Yamsaab » Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:20 pm

Hi,

New member here from Dillsburg PA, I'm sure there are plenty of other PA members on here and hope to eventually meet some. I'm finishing college shortly and have been lurking on the forum for a few months and getting my building itch. I always have a summer/spring project so building a teardrop would be a nice summerlong project. Lots of great info hear and hopefully I can contribute to some of the info.

Me and my girlfriend!! She likes the outdoors as much as I do.

I think I read over your build already. Where did you get your inspection and title/tag work done for your Hong Kong Freight trailer? I think that would probably be the most reasonable option as a starting platform for me. It seems like 95% of any trailer on Craigslist in the area does not have a title which is a nono in PA.

On my first build, I jumped through all the hoops and climbed past all the red tape the DMV had so that I could get it registered and titled in PA. Its a real pain, and you'll probably spend around $100+ for the inspections, tag fees, notary fees, etc. On my second build (and also my friend's newly finished teardrop), we registered them in Maine as a non-resident. Maine doesn't title trailers under 3,000GVW, but they will issue you a license plate so that you're good to go. It only costs $10.50/year + the cost of postage to mail the forms. For another $25/year you can get a vanity plate, which PA doesn't offer for trailers.

The registration options in PA are spread out over this forum and you really have to weed through a ton of posts, so just this week I've thrown together a reference page.... http://www.zkaylordesigns.com/register_pa.html

Yeah I looked into the Maine Registration but it kinda sucks if you sell the thing or if they change their laws. I'm tempted to do it the right way because if I ever would sell the trailer it would probably be much harder to get it on the road in a teardrop form over a piece of plywood on the trailer.

Regardless I would want to get a title for the trailer.

Not that I would have problems but the 12/year PA charges for registration isn't all that much more then 10.50 for an out of state registration that might catch the eyes of a bored Police Ocifer.

I forget what it cost me to get a title transfer and registration for this trailer but it was the most expensive part of putting it back on the road. I wanna say 70+ dollars.

Its not the money...its the aggravation.

Your a young man....don't put yourself through all that!

All states recognize other states registration systems. For $10.50 you eliminate many of the steps in Zach's posted PA. procedure. As well as the costs of these procedures.

Been there, done that and got the "T" shirt.

Happy Trails

Haha well I guess I'll have to do the Maine thing. I'll have to keep that in mind for when I see a small trailer without a title or a harbor freight trailer all built up and the owner says they can't get the title so their selling it.

We ride bikes with guys from maryland that all have their trailers registered in maine but it was mainly due to maryland charging an obsurd amount of taxes and registration fees.

I'm guessing I should pick up a router. I have access to table saws, radial arm saws, jigsaws, rotozips, and about every other wood working tool except the router.

Welcome to the forums.

Man I have been out of school so long, when did they add another start. Pensultucky?

I glad I live in Kansas. I wonder if you made the trailer, and had a detachable Teardrop shell. You can sale
the trailer so someone as a flat plywood trailer. Next sale the box shell to them in a separate transaction.
ok I’m being silly.

Enjoy your build, and had have fun

Yeah I'm not sure when you graduated from school but there's now 52 states. they divided PA and proceeded to further divide North Dakota and south Dakota. So now in addition to North and South Dakota there's Central Dakota. But I'm hoping that We'll be back to 51 states after the republic of Kalifornia seperates from the rest of the states. And I think the brown clown should become president of California so he can pass all his gun control garbage and be able to get away with it.

I wonder if we're gonna need a background check to buy a crock pot now....

Don't get me wrong the recent bombings are an awful thing but increased regulations and background checks would do little to prevent the bad guys from doing something like that again. I think jumping into passing laws and ammendments after a tragic event is not a good idea since people may be emotionly influenced and making rash decisions. Kinda like the movie Footloose......

Thanks for all the warm welcomes everyone.
