Yet another question about sharing conduit...

Postby Oregon Brew » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:04 pm

I am planning on running AC, DC, and speaker wiring from the front of my cabin (where the headboard is), to the rear of the cabin (where the converter is). I'm putting it in Wiremold running along the sidewalls. Along the port side will be the AC and starboard will be the DC (see! I did learn something!)

Couple of questions - the AC I'm using is just standard household Romex in the white insulation. First question - should I run the wires without the white insulation or leave it on? I know there is probably no significant risk either way - Inside the Wiremold it probably won't overheat with it or wear significantly without it. I just thought I'd ask.

Second question - Can I run my speaker wiring in the same channel as my 12v or will that cause problems too? Please don't tell me I need to run a third set of channel!

Thanks in advance, oh Jedis of Electricity!

#1, Leave the exterior insulation on.

#2, You likely could, but there may be some cross talk. If there is you will need to separate them. If you could use shielded speaker wire it would help prevent cross talk.

You can probably run speaker wires and 12 volt stuff in same channel.... You may get some electrical noise for some devices with electric motors into your audio, then maybe not....

Every single car on the road has speaker wire run right along with all the 12VDC wiring.

ALL of my wires share the same piece of 1" conduit from front to back. 120VAC, 12VDC, some speaker wire, and a wired stereo remote control. Although for my 120VAC I simply cut up an outdoor-rated extension cord instead of using Romex. The conduit is packed tight. 2 years later and no issues.

Oh... and my 10GA wire for my 140W solar panel runs through there too.

Some people here will probably flame me for doing that, but I laugh in their faces. Its a camper. Its not a space shuttle. :D
