Hello from North Carolina

Postby jlm3030 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 6:36 pm

Hi,
This is Jason From North Carolina. I have been scouring through this forum for months trying to figure out the best way to start my build. I have decided the profile should be a cub or ultralight. My tow vehicle is far from the most powerful on the planet and can only tow 1000 pounds which is why I am looking at the ultralight profile. The trailer though is still bothering me. The harbor freight trailer has the price I like but I don't like the wheel size and I am concerned about the methods to lower it. I have no experience in welding, does any one have any ideas of where to get a trailer for a decent price that has a low profile with larger wheels?
Thanks for any suggestions!

why do you want it lower to the ground? they have drop/raise tow hitches.

Check out the welded angle iron trailer with no mesh floor or rails that Northern Tool has. The regular price is around $500 but is on sale often. If you register with them you wil get coupons for $20 dollars off of $100 purchase. While it costs more, there is no assembly, the frame is already welded, looks lower to the ground and I think the wheels are 12". I think if I build another I will use this type of trailer. Just an option to consider. Good luck with your build.

Good question and thank you for your response. To answer your question I guess it was more for the esthetics. Many of the ultralights/cubs that I am seeing the floor tends to rest close to the axel. Where the harbor freight builds looks like the floor is closer to the top of the wheel. For example, if you look in the Hall of fame pictures the look I am going for is like Justin's Teardrop gallery/image.php?album_id=1355&image_id=94956&view=no_count. I have come across several posts where users are resting the axel on top of leaf springs to lower the profile but I did not know how safe this is which is why I assumed I would need a different trailer. What are your thoughts?

I tried to find a picture but it is not one that you can order. They are actually outside behind our store with all the other pre made trailers so you will probably have to go look at your local store. I hope you have one near by. Two additional things about the trailer, the size is 5 x 8 and when you look at it it will be very "floppy" if you flex it at the corners. Since there is no floor it will seem flimsy, but once you get the body (cabin) on it, the trailer becomes very stiff. When I first looked at it I thought their is no way I would use it because it flexed so much, but once I cut the mesh floor and rails off of the trailer I got on craigslist it did the same thing. Now I can't get it to move with the body on it.

I don't want you to be shocked when you check it out.

Welcome Jason! If this helps, this is what a Northern Tool 5x8 trailer looks like with 13 inch wheels (instead of the stock 12 inch wheels). The axle is attached above the leaf springs.
