TV antenna

Postby GerryS » Sun Apr 28, 2013 6:32 pm

I'll be traveling for a week and fully expect to to run into rain, leaving me inside. I'd like an antenna for my tv....that is flexible and I can "shoot" into a tree like a J Pole or bi-pole antenna. For UHF and VHF....

Are there any designs I can use? I can't take a large yagi...and I need in my hands my Friday :)

I use a small outdoor Phillips HD TV on a painters pole clamped to my shelter. This weekend I got about 15 stations.

If you know what a yagi is I suspect you know the upsides and downsides of antennas. Try a longwire and see what happens. TV signals are horizontally polarized so a vertical antenna isn't going to be optimal.

The Winegard Rayzar seems to work good. I bought one and did a comparison with the Winegard fold out antenna that I already had, and the Rayzar picked up 2 more channels than the fold out. I'm not impressed though with the suction cup mounting system, but it worked just as good after they slipped off and the antenna was laying on the ground. I got both antennas at Camping World, about $40 for the Rayzar.

I know horizontal polarization....it would be nice to us shoot a line into the tree, like I do wuth my 2 meter j-pole....but that isn't possible....

I know enough about antennas to know I don't know crap about antennas... I was thinking about a dipole between trees, but I haven't a clue what length(s) or how to connect it to coax.

I've had real good luck with one of those Stealth fighter looking mobile antennas that the truck drivers use. (Convenient since I am one :D ) You can get them at any truck stop/travel center. It has all the mounting hardware to go on a truck mirror or horizontal pole of some kind. mine even has a pass through for a cb antenna.

Experiment. SWR/impedance match probably isn't as important on receive as it is on transmit. Just connect the center conductor to one side of your dipole and the shield to the other. Mount your dipole on a thin board with a bridal so you can hoist it up and keep it horizontal.

Here are the frequencies. You might want to build several dipoles to match the different bands or even portions of the bands.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Amer ... requencies

Here's a calculator for converting MHz to wavelenght: http://www.unitconversion.org/frequency ... rsion.html

Each element of your dipole should be 1/4 wavelength long.

According to: http://members.tripod.com/martin_leese/ ... erial.html

"There are two forms of half-wave dipole. A simple half-wave dipole has an impedance of about 75 ohms and is just two bits of wire of an appropriate length. I use a "bunny ears" TV antenna with the ears adjusted to be in a straight line.

A folded half-wave dipole has an impedance of 300 ohms and is made from 300-ohm twin-lead with the ends shorted. You can buy these very cheaply."

So for a simple dipole no balun is required. If you want to build a folded dipole (more complicated) matching baluns/transformers 300ohm/75ohm are easy to find on EBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-New-75-Ohm-to ... 35c704a190

The materials are cheap. A big part of the experience is making your own. Even a 3 element yagi would be easy to make and hoist. There are lots of sites with details on how to construct yagis.

With antennas, bigger and higher is more betterer.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

You just gave me a bunch of links I had already found. I'm stopping at frys on the way home tonight to pick up a few splies....300 ohm flat lead, fishing line, solder (it's like Teflon tape....never can find it when you need it....

I'll be stranded for 5 days alone in North Carolina, about 10 miles north of Durham. I figure that close to the twin cities I aught to get something....

Most if the days ill be able to bicycle out....but at least two ill be stranded babysitting a smoker. Wouldn't be so bad, but alcohol in all forms is illegal to have on this state park. Darned puritans!

Every state park that I know restricts alcohol. Yet, when dumping trash, there are a LOT of brown bottles in recycling bins. Obviously very few know how to read. Me included.

Jerry, Jerry , Jerry

As a Hoosier Tearjerker you have an obligation to uphold the tradition of The Redneck Antenna. Almost every member of the core group has one. I have ran my home off of 2 of them since 08. 14+ channels on a board a few coathangers and a few bolts and a baylem transformer.

I will look for the original links and be right back.

rope tied around a baseball, throw over limb. tie speaker wire to rope. pull rope back over limb. hook up to tv. aluminum foil around a paper plate with other end of speaker wire twisted and taped to foil. wah lah. sounds crazy I know. I have seen it done twice and outstanding results. its like watching tv at home.

My 2-meter J-pole is made from copper pipe hard to carry in a small camper.
do you have a picture or description how yours is made?

2 meter twin lead j-pole. I doubt that it would of much use for TV reception though.
