A 4' wide is 48 inches, so I would say.......48 inches.

Our popup had a 48 inch wide bed. My wife and I are not small people, and it was OK with the soft sides, but I bet it would get a bit tight with hard sides. I don't think I'd go under 5 wide in a hard side camper unless I was camping solo.

Measure the width of both cars [probably very similar]
and make the TD that width [since you are thinking of
making it out of foam and then fiber-glassing that] if you
want to keep it within the tow cars maximum cross-section.

If Angie has claustrophobia issues, I'd be surprised if a
4 wide would really work. I'd guess the cars are probably
between 4 and 1/2 ft to 5 and 1/2 ft wide. Mock up the
cabin size and have Angie try it first to see how it affects her.
It's sort of pointless to spend the money and time doing
the build only to find she can't deal with it once it's built.

Also, 39 inches is a twin bed. Is that really enough space
for two ? A larger sized foam mattress can be cut down
for an 'exact' fit. And don't forget to allow an inch or so
all around to accommodate bedding etc..

Slow-try this to answer your question. Since you have some time before you build number 3, get plenty of cardboard and do a full mock up of the planned build4 ft wide. Then take an evening or two while inside the garage or wherever you do the mock up and sleep in it a night or two. This will reveal if a 4 wide is right for you on the cheap. I once bought a four wide just for solo camping sold it after one adventure.A 4 wide was definatly not for me. Also we tried two people - and forget it, space closes up real quick. Also remember that the interior of a 4 wide is not 4 ft.allowing for wall widths

If you have the time to look, find a utility trailer frame 15" tires cheap with title preferably or with a bill of sale, keep all your receipts while building on everything and DMV will issue a VIN and title. Full size bed is the smallest I would go for 2 adults, and trailer should easily come in under 800 pounds and tow able by almost anything.

There might even be an enclosed tiny cargo trailer in your area, that would work great viewtopic.php?f=42&t=51827

Unless there is a specific reason to keep it to 4' I would not. Compass Rose is 6' wide and the Subaru is not and yes you pay a price in wind resistance but it is not a big one. I remember a TearJerkers gathering where we were set up next to a couple that I would say were, well upholstered, and the tear was a 4X8 Little Guy. Fortunately some one else asked how they managed in the LG and the wife said they "learned to turn over together".
CR is a Grasshopper design 6' wide and not as aerodynamic as the more aerodynamic wing shaped teardrop design, and while intimacy is great it is also nice to have a bit of space to, turn over.

Slow, 39" is only a twin bed and unless you are both extremely small people, you are not going to be comfortable in that, plus you will have 9" of wasted floor space that could be used for comfy sleeping. Get a full size foam mattress (which is 54" wide) and trim 6" off of it so it will fit in your 48" wide trailer. 48" isn't that much to start with for two people, make the best use you can of what you've got.

Yea thats what we did,,,bought a full 6 inch spa sensation from WM and cut 6 inches off.Put a mattress cover and sheets on and it's very comfortable.I'm a pretty big fellow 240 lbs.and me and wife make it just fine.
