AlumaDump 5x8 Trailer

Postby jabrobbins » Sat May 04, 2013 9:00 am

Greetings,

I searched the archives for any discussion on this trailer, but came up empty. This looks to be an interesting alternative for a superlight build.
It's a 5x8 aluminum trailer. Its shipping weight is listed at 280 pounds.

I can't seem to find any online reviews even though it is sold at walmart ($1299) and amazon ($1600).

Looks like it might be a bit difficult to move the axle back to get the balance right, but otherwise it looks nice.

Have you priced a custom aluminum trailer? I just had a $5000 plus surgery that has derailed my planned summer build but I will also have an aluminum trailer made. I have two local welders with extensive aluminum and stainless welding but haven't gotten a quote yet. I'm not sure it will save much weight as heavier gauge metal is needed but I don't want to have to keep painting my trailer and am trying for low maintenance and light weight.

I have not price out custom aluminum trailers. This must be a newer product since I can't find any reviews on the web.

The 280 lbs must include the aluminum plate bed shown in the ads. My 5X8 all steel NT trailer only weighed 265 lbs and cost less than half of the Walmart price for the aluminum trailer. I would research the durability of the single arm aluminum tongue on a trailer as that is the most likely failure point.

Besides the cost, I'd have some concerns about the AlumaDump for a truly lightweight teardrop (say under 1000#).
With springs & stiff trailer tires rated at 2090# GVW the trailer would ride way too bouncy & unstable.
No provision for brakes if wanted.
More floor structure than needed for a teardrop.
The specs don't say how thick the 3" x 3" tongue tube is, so there's no way to calculate the tongue strength. A four foot single tongue takes the greatest load both vertically & horizontally right where this one is pinned & free to constantly shift between the two mounting angles. It all seems to me the perfect setup for the aluminum to fail from fatigue.
