Pinewood Derby Race for Dam Gathering. Spring 2013

We really need to come up with a jazzy name for the races. Like the Dam 500 or Taladega Tears. So any creative types on here please chime in on what we should name this thing, because it going in the future for many years to come.

Kirk, are you planning to adhere to "Cub Scout" rules of 5 oz max weight?

My car was built to that spec and I don't want to modify it if there's a different weight class.

We will have several classes. The traditional 5oz class. The 5oz-10oz class. The any oz upto 16oz ( this will be considered the unlimited class)

Please no cars more than 16 oz. It just breaks the end of the track and makes it a babysitting job.

And finally the trailer class. We shall see how this all plays out at the Dam. There may have to be more classes based on what folks show up with.

We will probably do a best of show class too where we pick the best looking car or the most creative.

Well we did it. We had the race and it was alot of fun. A really great effort made by all participants. I would recommend this activity to any regular gathering. It is fun for all ages and inexpensive to participate in. I will get some pics up as soon as I can. Thanks to Grant and Kay for letting me do the race and many thanks to all who made the effort to build and race.

The track looks easy enough to build. Is there a standards specification for the "gauge" or whatever you call the raised area that the wheels have to straddle?

Tom, we have had several tracks over the years. The one I have now that is in the pics is a manufactured track that I bought at California Hobby Dist. in CA of course. The the track you see in the pic is actually three tracks put together. The tracks are high quality MDF and need to be sealed or varnished to prevent decay. The tracks are kind of short, two tracks are necessary for a fun track - three track for a OMG track.

The owner of Cal Hobby told me to spread the word about the tracks. They have a pile of them that they have been struggling to sell for years. They are selling the tracks for $20 plus shipping, but the kicker is they are heavy and it cost about $20-$30 to ship. But it is still way cheaper than building one from scratch. I will measure the dimensions and report back.

Note that Cal Hobby is a distributor and normally does not sell to the public but in this case I know they would make an exception.
