I found the perfect Grey water tank for me

Postby jwhite » Wed May 22, 2013 9:35 am

I normally let my grey water from my shower run out on the ground because I normally camp alone out in a field or woods but last weekend I guess I wasn't parked level and the water was running out near my steps and it was the first time I have really noticed that is ran off instead of seaping into the ground.
So when I was in walmart I was looking for some type of device I could use and in the auto section I found a plastic pan the is made for those that change there own oil it is wide and has a large area that slopes down to the center where it has a screw plug, it also has a handle and a spout with a screw cap.
This thing is perfect and only cost 8.00 it's called a 15 quart drain container. I may not have to use it every time I camp but if I need it this works great.

I also found a plastic folding foot stool that works perfect as a step to get in and out of the trailer for 15.00 at walmart.

I use one for the intended purpose, oil. They are not particularly sturdy so i assume that you will not be standing on it? Oh and by the way not much good for the intended purpose oil splashes all over the place.

that is a good idea! Have you used it yet? does it work like you thought it would? the lip seems rather small, I wonder if the flow from your drain will be too fast before it leave that area into the bottom portion?

jwhite, Howdy;

Interesting solution to your drain problem .. maybe you could use a short extension
hose might help 'focus' the stream into the hole of the container.

I tried it last night and it worked perfect,my shower is in the front right side of my traier, I slid it under the trailer and went in the shower and I could see through the drain hole it was in the right spot so I turned on the shower and let it run several minutes and went outside and watched to see what was going on and all the water went in it.
there may be a time that I am parked on pavement or hard dirt and I need to contain the water and this works perfect.
my showers are more like a rinse off than long = I carry 16 gallons of water and have never used more than half that, this last trip was 5 days so I think it will take a while to fill it up?

I have used one since 2006 for grey water collection at the back of the teardrop. Pull the water container out to the back edge of the teardrop and place the oil change container under it. It works great and others have used the idea also.

Here is a simple idea for you to all think of and it would work good. So go to Home Depot or a home improvement store and purchase the pan they use to put the water heaters on they are round and large enough and there is a side plug on it where you could install a hose onto it so the water can drain away from your campsite. Instead of using oil pans like that why not just go simple and by the water heater pan that is larger and then just put a non slip shower mat inside of it so it is not slippery when wet. Then you have it all figured out. And if you want to get even more creative take two of the water heater pans and make a portable outdoor shower. Take one Water Heater Pan and put on the ground and then take PVC white pipes and attach connectors to the bottom pan and to the upper pan and then put the PVC pipes upright and attach to the lower pan and upper pan and then put put your solar bag on top to heat up in the sun or put the water inside the pan and then you have a portable walk in shower and goes up in secs and take down in secs. Then you are all good to go .

I like it! I have something similar but it is more upright and holds 3 gal. Your's holds almost 4 gal and is lower to the ground; so, someone's foot couldn't accidentally kick it over. The next time I'm in Walmart, I'll take a look. Thanks! :D
