Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer Mounting Suggestions/Ideas

Postby burlesot » Tue May 28, 2013 9:42 am

Hey all,

I just purchased a La Crosse Technology indoor/outdoor thermometer. It was pretty cheap; like $17

My intention was/is to be able to have the monitor in the teardrop and the exterior sensor somewhere on the teardrop so I could see how hot/cold it is outdoors and indoors. However, when I read the manual on the sensor, it said to keep it in a shaded, dry place. They suggest putting it under an eave on the north side of the house.

I planned to stick it under the teardrop, behind a piece of the frame, so that it would be fairly 'sheltered' from rain and moisture while driving. In actuality, this should be a good spot, except for when I'm on the road and it's raining/snowing, right?

I guess I could mount it in such a way that I could take it 'off' when it starts to rain, etc. But part of the plan with this was to stick it and 'forget it' until the batteries went down and had to be replaced.

Here is a link to the manual: http://www.lacrossetechnology.com/9006/manual.pdf

Has anyone had any luck with different placements?

Thanks in advance,
Todd

I'm planning on getting something similar as well. I was thinking that I would place the outside sensor in the tongue box.

It think your plan to install under the frame would work fine as well. I doubt it would get wet at all from road spray if you are careful with its placement. On top of this for only $17 bucks I would be willing to risk it.

Just thought of something. I could purchase one of those 'monster' magnets at Harbor Freight. I could cable clamp the sensor to the magnet and then 'stick' it on the frame. That way I could easily remove it to replace the battery.

Thanks for your guidance Ryan.

I used Velcro for both my indoor and outdoor sensors. I stick the outdoor sensor to my tongue box when I am camping and put it in the tongue box when I'm not. It is 3 years old and still works great. Just a hint. Use the Hook portion of the Velcro on the trailer and the softer part on the sensor.

Since I leave my galley hatch open almost all the time, I am just going to set the remote sensor on the shelf in the galley, and put the display in the cabin somewhere convenient.

I don't sleep with the hatch open. I don't want the animals to get into my food or the wind to rip my hatch off..

Used velcro and mounted outside sensor to bottom of tongue box lid. Works great except when sun shines on tongue box get a higher than actual temp reading.

I too just got one of these and am facing the same issue. I was thinking of maybe mounting it on the underside of one of the fenders in some kind of protective box with holes in it to let the air in and any water out. Thoughts?

I glued a big magnet to it and stuck it up under the frame. Working great!

I put my sending unit in a zip-lock bay to keep the water out and used zip ties to hold it in place on the backside of the foot well. work great for the last 3 years.

why not on the rear hatch. I have the same plans what i have found is i am going to have to find a way to keep it solar powered. the galley tempature will be close to the same to the outside with the galley hatch closed. Another option i am considering is i have a small one that is battery powered that last forever but havent setup in this house. it was a gift back in 2000, it has a wired exterior i am thinking of running to just inside the hatch and next to the cooler.

I have mine in the front, under the trailer, zip tied to the first frame member where road spray and rain can't get to it.
Has worked okay for 7 years.
Have changed batteries twice.

What about protecting it inside a PVC pipe with caps. Would it get an accurate reading?

Rebapuck,

That would impede the sensors I think.

I just put it on the fender when I set up camp, and put it back on the headboard when I tear down camp. I figured I didn't want to go through a lot to change the batteries in it, so I tried to keep it simple for me.
