Student built teardrop for sale?

Postby petertl » Sun Jun 02, 2013 6:31 am

I am beginning a contextualized GED program with emphasis on the construction industry. We are looking to develop some basic carpentry and other construction skills. We are probably going to build some picnic tables and storage sheds but thought it may be a neat idea to build a simple teardrop to be sold and the moneys go back into the program.
Just wanted to put this idea out there to foster others' ideas and thoughts.
Thanks,
Peter

Hi, Peter!

I know of several Voc-Ed instructors who have attempted the very same thing. While it is a very good and admirable idea, one invariable snag always comes up ... liability! I hope things in VA are different than here in CA, and you can make the teardrop part of the program work. If you ever hear of or run into Bob Evans somewhere in Arkansas, be sure to ask him about his experiences with his program in San Bernardino County, CA ... he and a couple of other folks found a "workaround" and managed to build and sell a small handful of teardrops back in the late '90s, even placing several students into Fleetwood's workforce, so it can be done!

Good Luck, and as always ...

I would think if you built a "box" to sit on a premade trailer such as a 5x8 northern tools trailer you could avoid legal issues.

In this day and age I hope you are right. Many times our legal issues begin with your first three words, "if you build." Very frustrating world we live in.
