Hot glue to hold insulation panels in place?

Postby burlesot » Mon Jun 03, 2013 10:27 am

All,

Would it make sense to use hot glue to hold my insulation panels in place on the teardrop? They are currently fit only with friction (as I've been cutting and placing them). I had planned on using something like Gorilla glue, but realized that I may not need that 'strong' of a bond. My 12 volt wiring is hidden under the insulation panels.

Sincerely appreciate any insights.

Hot glue twill melt the styrofoam, if you use that type. Also, not a permanent hold. Cold will cause hot glue to fail.

Aha.
See, that's why I posted this!

So, the next question would be gorilla glue, or locktite? I have both. I'm looking for a permanent bond. I've had good experiences with Gorilla glue.

PL makes a foam board adhesive; I used it on mine and it works fine:

Les45,

Did you have to brace it a great deal?

Does it have pretty good holding power without being braced/clamped?

I used the same, its called PL 300 and it works great. I found it doesn't need bracing unless you are trying to bend the insulation around a slight curve. Just push it into the adhesive with only friction to hold it and in a few hours it will be set.

I cut all my foam on the heavy side so it was pretty well wedged between the spars. I used 3/4" plywood on the walls so I only insulated the top, ends, and floor. Even on the bottom angles the wedge effect held the foam in place until I could get the 1/4" plywood skins on over it. I also ran all my DC wiring for lights and fan in the ceiling under the insulation. I have a lot of detail with pictures in my journal if you do a search in that section.

I was going to post this a while back but your question gave me the kick I needed.
