40x48 base camp trailer

Postby paul.luna » Tue Jun 04, 2013 9:24 am

So I am new to the forum, Hello my name is Paul and I am in San Diego area (north county)

I have a 40x48 trailer and was thinking about making a base camp/galley trailer out of it. I have a Tacoma with a shell that will be the sleeper I love the tear drop designs I'm just not ready for the whole thing and I also don't have the parking space. The 40x48 fits in my garage and my wife can still park in front of it. I've drawn out some plans on my computer it's gone through many revisions (on paper) I think I have my final plan I just wanted to bounce some ideas or hear some feed back on the deck, (should I build a frame) on the walls (should I use plywood and cover it or paint it) Glue, screws, both? resin? So much to ask.

I'll see if I can post my plans they are only 2d I'll try to explain what everything is too.

Hey Bob went through your post Great stuff! Did you extend your box? It looks like you went with the 40" width just appears longer than 48". I love the under floor storage and those side doors are Sweet! What are they from? I'm using a Harbor Freight mini trailer (actually I might sell my trailer and get the heavy duty 40x48 trailer for this build) Did you extend your tongue as well?

The box is 40" wide by 7 feet long it is extended 24"- forward and 12" beyond the rear. I installed a 2x2x3/16 tongue that is bolted at every crossmember front to rear. I added 28" beyond what was stock length for better towing and backing and to allow for the tongue box. The doors are the big RV access doors and can be found in several sizes at most RV salvage centers. I think the trailer scales out in the 550 pound range.

LOL I just keep coming up with questions. 12" or 8" wheels? I am still debating on if I am going to sell this trailer for a more heavy duty model mine is the 870 Lb. Capacity Utility Trailer, thinking of upgrading to the 1090 Lb. Capacity Utility Trailer.

Oh and my stupid Graphic program won't let me export to a jpg file, well not until I upgrade it at least.

Thanks

If these are both HF trailers the only difference is the tire weight capacity the frames themselves are exactly the same.

Mine was the 12" tire model and I later put on the 8" tires you see in the picture and used the 12" on Chubby who is 1800 pounds +

Ah, OK I thought the heavy duty model came with the 3 leaf springs too. I was also toying with the idea of getting the 4'x8' folding trailer and just using half of it, moving the axle to where the one on the smaller trailer is. Is the Chubby the Barn one?

Yeah I needed to have the wife wrangle them up after a bit they kept getting under foot.

I was thinking how this trailer has been evolving It was one idea then it changed and so on. Funny how you have things on paper and they don't translate well sometimes in practice so you change it up to work. I have been making on the fly changes since I started this project. So far I am happy with each one I've made, except maybe the Galley hatch (or lack there of) I have been toying around with how best to make this. I may have to move or cut my spar, I need to figure out a hinge and how to make it water proof.

Not a lot done today I did get the Tongue that was 2 trips to the metal yard. I also stopped at Harbor Freight and got a Swivel jack the one with a wheel. I mounted the hitch and chains and started drilling the holes I need for the rest. I need to get the longer bolts tomorrow. I'll prime it and get some paint on it before I mount it. I'll post a pic tomorrow.
