Where did the first one go? I know it sounds like a totally noob question, and it might be the same question asked by Mbasaraba, but what do you do with the skeleton wall form the first pic?

spbiknut wrote:The walls are going to be skinned on the outside with 1/4 plywood then layered with fiberglass and painted. The primary support wall is 3/4 plywood and the inner skin is 5mm finished plywood.

Are the walls in the second pic 1/4" outer skins? Are the walls of this build ~1.25" thick - a composite of 1/4"+3/4"+5mm?

Thanks - Tim

If you look closely at this picture you can see the outside of the wall with the lighting holes in it that have been filled in with the insulation board (pink-ish). The second picture in your post is of the inside skin (5mm or 3/16) that has been glued to the inside of the 3/4 lighting holed wall. The walls will turn out to be 1-3/16" thick.

Looking closely to that curbside wall pic (even at that angle) the fact that it is so hard to make out the difference between the foam and the skeleton is surely a fine compliment to the fabulous jod that you did fitting the foam. It takes patience and skill to get a nice tight fit like that!

Thanks for the kind words KC, but they don't fit as tight as it appears. :NC I used a jigsaw to cut them out and plan to use some foam to fill in the gaps. The jigsaw is the way to go, but my eyes aren't as good as they use to be and my cuts ended up all over the place.

So I take it you just lay the skeleton wall over the piece of insulation and trace the size onto the sheet then take off the wall and cut out the shapes? Thats how I planned on doing mine just want to make sure that is the common method...

If I may, what I found to work best was to make the rough cut a little wide, because, invariably, the cut would wander a bit or not be plumb/square (we tried jigsaw, radial saw, steak knife, and long blade razor knife (the snap off type).

By far the quickest and cleanest was the razor knife held at a long drawing angle, making 2 or 3 long drawing slices for each cut. Then just a few strokes with a course sandpaper on a hard back to plumb things up and optimize the fit (a little messy, but controlled and mostly just fell to the floor, whereas the power methods sent it flying). The shop vac is your friend.

My experience; YMMV.

Edit: I have to add that most of my cuts were rectangular and did not have the trick rounded corners like the Tiki Hut.

This pic makes MUCH more sense to me now. Thank you! I'm still thinking about making a fiberglass shell.

Got some stuff done this past week. Didn't get to the interior skin...we've been having some bad weather and I'm working half in and half out of the garage...so when it starts raining I have to pack everything back into the garage and wait until it blows over. I got the VCT tile down on the floor, the spars in for the roof and the head board fabricated. The VCT tile was the first time I've ever done tile work...it turned out ok...a few very small gaps if you look close enough...but I'm happy with it.

Crack. What crack? We don't need no stinkin' crack! (- paraphrasing Mel Brooks, Blazing Saddles)

At least it is on the unseen side and will be easy to reinforce/fix.

Looking good!

Blazing Saddles....Great Movie!

Yeah...it was my totally fault...I tried to rush putting it on and hadn't 'seasoned' the bend enough. Oh well...I'll put some extra glue in the crack when I put the insulation in and weight it down a bit...can't even tell from the inside...no real biggie, but when I heard wood crack the way it did the first thought was "Oh $#%&!"
