Canned Ham convention in Death Valley

Drove through Death Valley yesterday and came across this photo tacked to bulletin board at Texas Spring Campground:

Hopefully it was early spring!

I did a bicycle event there in 1993 called the "Death Valley Double" from Stovepipe Wells to Shoshone and back. Maybe 50 of us out there, I think, all strung out along the road. Late March, daytime temps already approaching 90. On the return leg a guy passed me, miles from anywhere. A few minutes later I come around a corner and see he's on the ground, crashed - lots of road rash and lots of hair!

Hair? He'd hit some sort of animal - he thought it was a coyote.

next month (yes, in july) there is the 'badwater ultra', where contestants pay a hefty fee for joy of running from badwater to the Whitney Portal (135 miles).

That's right, entry fee is $995

And you thought a honda generator was expensive?

When I visited Death Valley 2 days ago, I visited the following campgrounds (scouting for a future visit):

Emigrant - empty
Texas Spring - one RV
Stovepipe Wells - empty
Thorndike - 2 cars, one truck with camper in bed, no tents or trailers
Mesquite Spring - empty
Furnace Creek - closed
Wildrose - empty

I'm sure there will be even more empty slots in the next couple of months. It was 117F two days ago at furnace creek. Oh, and if you stay somewhere close to furnace creek, the furnace creek ranch sells shower/pool passes for $5.

I have camped many time at Texas Springs in the upper level. In Jan. It is not as nice there after they "improved" it a few years back. But it is one of my favorite camp sites. I always like watching the sun rise as the mountains on the west side of the valley light up.
