Yeti coolers.

Postby philh24 » Mon Jun 10, 2013 5:23 am

Has anyone any opinions on the yeti coolers. I have not seen them in the UK before but I have just found a site over here that imports them. They claim 5-10 days of keeping food nicely chilled.i believe there made in the USA. They also sell an Australian model Iceytek. They are both quite pricey but worth it if they work well.

I got my Yeti - the medium size one - it is in the truck so I don't know the size right now but it is amazing!! Follow the instructions to "pre-cool" and it will keep things cool for days!! The longest I have used mine is three days - and with a half hearted attempt at a pre-cool it kept an inside temp of between 30-32 (f)...from my perspective that was pretty impressive!! It is built like a tank - check out the youtube vids on bears attacking it -- impressive -- has a way to padlock it (either for bears or other predators) and is very nice looking as well!!

For me - the extra price was worth the quality. I had done some pretty extensive research and read about coolers (vs. a fridge) and decided to go the cooler route. Hope that helps!!

Personally, I don't really have a need for these high priced coolers, but I will say that I just saw some Pelican Coolers at Costco alongside some Yeti's, and they looked to me tougher than the Yetis (for example, more rugged clasps and handles) and a bit cheaper. I'd suggest checking out the Pelicans.

That is getting close to the price of a 12V fridge/freezer unit.

But fridges seem to mean either huge battery racks or staying on shore.

That's true for a thermoelectric fridge but a 12V compressor fridge has a surprisingly low energy draw.

Tundra Fridge

That being said, I wouldn't use one without a PV panel to recharge the battery during the day.

P.S. Do a search on the Yeti cooler, there are forum members that have them and they seem to love them.

Thanks for posting your results Bruce, I may buy a better cooler until I ultimately build a small standy with a 12v fridge. Hoping to have 300 watts solar (I have acquired 200 so far) so I can boondock with a working fridge.

Good to see you got the Yeti; hope you are enjoying it.

I bought the 65 qt a couple of weeks ago and have used it twice. I am very pleased with it. First outing, I cooled the drinks but box was room temp--rather it sat in bed of truck a day and night before use. Filled it (Wednesday morning) and headed to a swap meet where it sat in the sun most of each day. Added a small 10 lb bag of ice on Friday as it had been opened frequently, and still had a little ice and a lot of very cold water mid day Tuesday. That is 6 days in mid 90 degree temp in direct sun

Yes I bought the small one used it twice so far and I am very pleased with it. I still had ice after 5 days and that was with opening it at least 4-5 times a day. I did pre cool mine though like they recommend, well worth the money.
