Cedar: to treat or not?

Postby burlesot » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:21 pm

Hey,
I just added a really nice ceiling made of aromatic cedar 1/4" stripping over 1" of foam insulation. It smells great. I am leaning towards NOT putting polyurethane over it, but I wanted to hear from you all before I did anything.

Thanks,
Todd

It is up to you, however, you are in a small space with a lot of cedar. There is the possibility of too much of a good thing. Try it ... it it's overwhelming then you can seal.

Good point.

I think I'll live with it. And decide after living in it for a while.

I usually spray a little mist of cedar oil in the corners and shelves of may tears. It is a natural insect repellant and it smells great! I wouldn't cover it.

I hadn't thought of putting a little cedar oil to discourage bugs, what a great idea !! Where do you buy it, haven't noticed it in oour stores because I haven't looked for it.

PKCSPT,

I ordered mine from Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_sabc?url=search-alias%3Daps&pageMinusResults=1&suo=1370881277145#/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=cedar%20oil&sprefix=cedar+oi%2Caps&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Acedar%20oil ). I got the oil from Texas since I live in Texas.

I rub it on my ankles and chins if I know I am going to be hiking or if I am going to mow the lawn.

All the wood used on my build (floor, framing, ceiling and walls) are cedar. I initially used a couple of coats of Danish Oil finish on the interior of my tear. I just finished this past Sunday putting several coats of wipe on poly on the interior surfaces. It wasn't the odor but I just wanted the cedar to have a medium sheen and show off the different cedar colors and grains which it did. My interior is 1/8 inch thick by 3/4 inch wide strips.
