I loved reruns of the Phil Silvers show when I was growing up.....it was on late at nite and it felt like you were watching something naughty/subversive...but really funny!!

Here is my Military lantern and she is a Honey!!

I am okay... just a little mental on Lanterns.

Trying to relate the Military lantern something of that era.

Sgt Bilko aka The Phil silvers show was one of my favorites and always made me laugh.

Hope everyone sees the Lantern and not lost amongst my odd humor.

Hey we are all little mental when it comes to collecting lanterns! I did warn you. I'm still looking for a military lantern that is not way over priced and in half way decent condition. I also get your odd sense of humor. in case I forgot to say, nice military lantern.

Just something about playing with liquid fuel and fire. Something like harnessing a volcano or something.

Hey Randy funny how times have changed since the first run of Bilko. Smoking on TV was part of the advertising buy in to the program.

But back then it was all good I guess.

That was Phil s show back then and everyone was hamming for the camera all the time...loved it!!

Now would of my Military lantern been featured on the show?? Maybe?? Provenance that I must research??

I am going to pull the nozzle and clean the opening there, maybe prime the generator and giver her a go...fingers crossed...and not much pressure.

Well I think it is working???

I pulled the generator...cleaned the tip and blew some air through and then primed the generator.

gave a few pumps turned the knob on 1/4 turn then closed it...primed the mantle I guess. couple more pumps...then turn on valve and got her going.

Sounds great with that distinct roar...but it is a fussy one when I went lite it again later that evening.









Any tips on these Milspec lanterns???!!!

I find that in lighting them it takes the time of one match to burn out before there is fuel at the mantle. Mine will usually catch just as I put the 2nd match in. Turn the valve off of course when there is no lite match in there or you may get a light show. Sometimes it is pretty neat but usually it is lots of sooty flames. I often get 10-15 seconds of dancing blue flame in the chamber. rather cool when that happens.

I crank the valve and listen for it to gurgle, I think that gurgle is the fuel hitting the tip on the gennie. That's when I light it. Doug

I am not so sure about that. I kind of think these lanterns where designed with the goal to keep the troops busy and out of other trouble.

Maybe they expect you to tear it completely down after each use oil it up, clean it up and put it back together again??

This is my Lantern. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Lantern is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My Lantern, without me, is useless. I got a wrench and the tip cleaner and went to town on the 252. Put in a new mantle!!

Now she roars and put of a nice lite!!
