Great deal on 12v / USB charging station

Postby danlott » Wed Jun 12, 2013 11:55 am

Found a great deal on 12v / USB charging stations on ebay. The outside trim piece is 3.75 x 5 inches, which is larger than I had pictured, but they are very nice.

I need something like that, with about 5 or 6 USBs...3 or4 phones, and 2 iPads. Man, I hate technology sometimes!

The opinions in this post are my own. My comments are directed to those that might like an alternative approach to those already espoused. There is the right way,the wrong way,the USMC way, your way, my way, and the highway.

I'm no electrical engineer, but I've found that some of the smaller cigarette lighter USB adapters don't provide enough current to charge some items. It took a few until I found one powerful enough to charge my old iPhone 4. I recently upgraded to the larger LG Optimus G Pro with a HUGE battery and I get a "slow charging" alert when I plug it into my car. Guess I need to find a more powerful USB charger. :?

I already have an inverter with USB station in the cabin of the trailer, but I found a back-up that I can use if the battery fails, a wind-up flashlight w/USB. Never considered one 'til I saw this one.

http://www.etoncorp.com/en/productdisplay/clipray-1It has a crank arm that will give you ten minutes of power if you crank it twice a second for 60 seconds. Small enough to hang on the wall of the trailer (and it's good exercise in a small dark cabin!) Combined with my SansaFuze MP3 w/radio, and charger cord that fits both my phone and my wife's phone, I can see and get info in case of off-grid battery failure (short-term)...and then there's always my car and/or generator available.

I like the Eton unit, for $15 it seemed like a good deal, until I read:

Please note not compatible to charge iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, or 5.

For USB charging I'll stick to power supplies that plug into standard cigarette lighter sockets. There are a number of different methods those little units tell the device it has the extra power available. So I'll install multiple cigarette lighter sockets, and put the appropriate power supply in each as needed. I also will be giving each socket it's own power switch/circuit breaker. That way I can turn them on and off as needed. When you are initially building it isn't hard to put 4 or so sockets in.
