San Jose, CA newbie

Postby ACK » Tue May 14, 2013 2:45 pm

Greetings!

I've been lurking for a while and am truly impressed by the craftsmanship you folks display and your willingness to share your experiences. I've been reading old forum posts, reviewing plans, "borrowing" ideas from the Hall of Fame and the Galley Gallery and I think I'm ready to take the first huge step in my build: Tell my wife that she can't park her car in the garage for the next year...

If anyone in the area has a source for 5' x 10' plywood, would appreciate the lead.

Thanks
ACK

Welcome to the forum, and you too may experience a bit of wife reluctance. Your best bet is to take her to a gathering, or perhaps some teardropper that lives close to you. One of them might chime in, if they read these posts and are willing to show your sweetie how nice these little trailers are. I know that worked for me, when we made to move from a 28 ft motorhome to a 4 x 8 teardrop trailer.

By your question about 5 x 10 plywood, I suspect you are planning a 10 foot long build, a 5 foot wide build or perhaps both. This board is a wealth of information, don't hesitate to ask questions, someone will surely answer. We are here to help. If you drive about 400 miles south, I would be happy to give you a teardrop tour, here in So Calif. (Only 95 degrees today!) Good luck on your build.
:D 8) Roly, the li'l ol So Calif woody guy........Oh, by the way, step two would be to buy a trailer frame and start your cardboard profile, after that, there is no truning back.

Thanks for the welcome!

I am indeed planing on a 10 foot long and 5 foot wide build. I'm 6'4" and need the room...

Dano, thanks for the offer and the tip on Southern Lumber. I used to go there in the '70s as a SJSU student to get art supplies for my girlfriend. Forgot all about them.

The car my dearly beloved has is a silver VW bug. It occured to me last night that from where the windshield starts to the rear bumper it's virtually the same length and profile as the TD I'm thinking about. I'll just tell her I'm building it a little brother. Sometimes the answer is right under your nose.

Hi ACK,

I'm also in the Bay Area. Last year there were two rallies I was able to attend. One in Petaluma and one (specifically for teardrops) on Treasure Island. You'll have to swing by the TI event this year. It's lots of fun to see a dozen or so tears all in one place together. You can walk around and chat with the owners and see how everyone has personalized and customized their trailers whether new, custom built, vintage, restored, or something in between.

Hi Stacie

Thanks for the tip. I've been spending all my time reading the how-to forums and never made it down to the "where" before. 10/26 is on my calander. Love your pic of the palm tree reflected in the TD window.
