Applying Undercoating

I finished my floor and was applying the roof coating and found it very difficult to apply and apply it with a thick enough layer to maintain its integrity. They a light bulb went off and I can up with a fast and effective way to apply.
I went ot Lowe's and found a flooring adhesive trowel with the smallest notch I could find. I also got a spackling blade to scoop out the emulsion. I scooped out the emulsion, placed it on the trowel and then spread it on the floor. Then using the notch's, I got a consistent layer, then I used the flat edge and smoothed it out. I placed it out in the sun and in two days it was dry enough to mount my floor. I did the same with my infloor storage box.
I initially tried to brush this on and could not get a consistent thickness and it is very tough on your wrists trying to spread it around.
Just a little tidbit to make life a little simpler.

I used fiber reinforced Roof Coating. The trowel technique worked very well. I coated it Saturday and installed it this evening. Here are a few pics!





I need to finded a recessed pull so that I can remove the hatch without a screw driver.
I was going to use the hatch as an outside table mounted to the side of the WeekEnder, but the original hatch was too small because I used a flush router bit to cut it out. I will finish and trim it for a table.

Home Depot has some recessed cup thingies that have rings in them. I bet they have a name for them too.

Mike: that sure is looking real good. Easy to move around in. I think it will be a real asset. Course when it is finished, we won't need to ask questions so we can think up silly jokes, HUH!!

I used herculiner for my undercoating. Went on very easily with a roller. Two coats was plenty. Probably considerably more expensive than the route you went. Took about a gallon (about $100).

The roof coating cost about $6.90 and used about 3/4 of a gallon for the undercoating on the floor and the storage box. We'll see how it holds up.

Ace Hardware has those recessed pulls that you mentioned.

I went to ACE at lunch and found recessed pulls for sliding doors. I think they will work. Worst case, I bore a hole!

I went with the only one Lowes had. $6.80 gallon. I used abot 1/2 a can on my 4X10 floor.[/url]

The Slides from Ace did not work. They are for sliding doors and you can not lift the cover for the floor storage. I just bored a hole with a forstner bit and stained around the hole.

Do you have a boat store near you? A hatch pull (with or without a catch) is exactly suited to your purpose, being flush when it's down.

You would also get the benefit of being entitled to make statements such as "Avast, me hearties!", when all you're doing is getting some socks out of the storage space......

The Gardner's in the link Mike posted (post #3 above) is what I used. I had no problems brushing it on, but then, It's Florida, and the can had been sitting in the sun, and it was very pilable and easy to brush on. I still have more to apply. I installed foam foil-backed insulation under the floor against the undercoating, and when the trailer is finished, I plan on brushing more roof coating on the bottom of the foam (actually, to the foil lining attached to foam).
