What the heck

Postby Scooter6175 » Thu Jun 13, 2013 7:55 pm

Finally decide to jump into a TD build today. At least I thought I would, went to the local Harbor freight to pick up a 4 X 8 trailer
after getting to HF I ask one of the associates about a heavy duty trailer ( wanted the 5 lug bolt pattern) I was informed that the my local store was not aloud to sell said trailer or any of their trailers, something about they had lost their DMV license. (What the heck) Why??
Now I an looking at the 5 X 10 heavy duty trailer setting under the carport, the problem is not sure i want to go that big, and it has the rail about a foot above the deck of the trailer. so I'm wonder if i can cut off the rail or would it make the trailer lose to much strength?

Welcome! You won't be sorry you built a bigger 5x8 unless you have a small tow vehicle. As for cutting off the trailer rail you will probably be OK because the camper frame will add to the strength. Post a photo and maybe we could see it better.

Welcome Scooter You didn't say where you lived. Each state is different and I am sure there are lots on here that would like to know and did you ask if they are getting their licence back and does it affect all states? you sorta opened a can of worms, Sorry.

I cut the rails off of the trailer that I got off craigslist (and the mesh floor) and it worked fine for mine. It was really "floppy" after I removed them and I thought "what have I done?" But once you add the camper box and bolt/screw it down it becomes very solid.

Mary C, I live in West Virginia, I did ask but guy I asked had no idea if or when they would get their license back. He did say it was just their store.
