Where are the weekenders?

Postby les45 » Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:58 am

I haven't seen anyone working on a weekender since WhitneyK and I finished ours last year. I know this is heresy among the teardrop traditionalists, but the weekender really does have a lot of advantages. More room inside the cabin with the flat roof; easy to cut out (no arcs to figure), easy to skin (no bending), and simple lightweight hatch construction (especially if you go with two pieces like I did). As some others have pointed out, it is kind of slow on the forum right now so I thought I would try to stir up a new topic.

It may be slow here because we are no longer locked up in the house looking out at the snow wishing it was camping season.
IT IS Camping Season! Time to get out and try out our creations or at least the new accessories or upgrades we made over the winter months.
But great pictures of your wonderful trailer. :applause:
Hope this thread generates some more pictures.

I almost went with that type when I started but switched back to the regular style when the time came. I do like the looks of them when they have the "off road" look to them and the color of yours but my wife wouldn't go along with yellow. Maybe the next one will be a weekender.

I'm building my weekender right now. Of course, I've "perverted" it by rounding the front end. But what can I say, I'm looney. :?

I'm working on one using AutoCAD at the moment, I'm working on a few changes from the typical design:
1) Full-height galley hatch with the body moved forward on the trailer frame so the hatch does not have the under-curved panel, like zapj's
2) Stretched the cabin to make almost full use of 4x10' plywood, increasing the storage at the head of the bed by lengthening the upper and lower front panels plus the floor.
3) The front wall of the tear will be fully vertical behind the tongue box, making the lower angled nose panels only ~9-12" wide per side.
4) A 5k BTU air conditioner stored in the nose, with a door and drawer slides to extend it forward once parked.
5) absolutsnwbrdr's raised bed design to cross the wheel wells without intrusion into our leg space, plus cantilever out to 62" to fit a 60x80" queen mattress on a 4x8 HF frame.

My biggest concern is tongue weight for moving it around the driveway (my current TV has a Class IV hitch), but smart battery positioning should help with that. Another issue is how to support the bed floor forward of the frame, beyond tying it into the tongue box and skirting around it. Another issue is balancing tongue box height, air conditioner clearance, A-frame jack handle clearance and the ability to open the tailgate on my SUV (as my dog typically rides in her cage with the door at the tailgate).

I'm planning premade doors and a painted finish, probably tan exterior walls, white roof, white interior, I haven't picked an overall theme yet. I'm a few weeks from finishing building a shed in my back yard, then I can empty a ton of junk from my garage and basement and build the tear for next season. Ideally, my objective is to be ready for a debut trip to the Chesapeake Tearjerker's St Patrick's Day festivities.
