Toast with breakfast?

Postby bikeopelli » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:35 pm

Gone are the days when I enjoyed tossing a few dry food items in my backpack along with a few other bare essentials and disappearing into the Sierras for a few days. I am old now and while I still enjoy keeping a small footprint out there (witness my 4X6 CTC), I find I need just a few more creature comforts than I did then. One of them, as the 'subject' suggests, is toast with my eggs and/or coffee in the morning. All the typical stove top toasters dry the toast out too much for my liking. So this year I decided to do something about that. Since I have a Solar setup with around 900 amps available at full charge (4 deep cycle 6 volt batteries) I made a luke-warm stab in that direction. As I expected that approach would be too much trouble (i.e. maybe build a single slice unit to get the wattage down in the 400 range) otherwise known as 'diminishing returns'.
So the next obvious choice would be propane. Looked at those small round catalytic heats... naaa.
Then I thought about the little "Mr. Heater" we use to preheat the trailer on cold nights. The protective wire grate on the front easily folds down and out of the way. Using some scrap Stainless sheet, a length of aluminum welding rod and a coupla machine screws/nuts I fashioned my 'toaster' as you can see below. After a bit of trial and error I got it dialed in and can now make a pretty acceptable (camping rules) piece of toast that does not break like a saltine cracker. By keeping 'the other side' up against that SS sheet, the moisture, to some degree does not escape. And no 'diminishing returns' here... took about an hour and 0 bucks to make!
An added plus is... Since my bride 'owns the kitchen', and is easily irritated by my presences in it when she is preparing food, I can 'do the toast' and not be underfoot!

I've been wondering lately about decent ways to make toast at camp and this seems pretty good for those with a propane heater. Are there any other ways that people have found that work well?

I have a Coleman bade wire rack I use on top of my Coleman gas stove. 4 slices at once. I've not often made toast when camping, so it may have been a couple decades since I used it last. I think the last time I did toast I stuck it directly on the grill. I've also toasted in a hot skillet.

My bride just heats up...you guessed it...cast iron. Dry, no oil, and toasts the bread by setting it on the CI. We've got the skillet, Dutch oven, and a griddle. Works pretty well.

The chances that those pieces of toast were given that nearly even golden brown color by using that type of toaster are about .000000001%.

For buttered toast while camping...

I remember my father "frying" slices of bread in a lightly buttered CI skillet on our Coleman stove.

Don't remember whether he cooked the toast first or last (eggs, bacon,...).

Usually toast can be done last after eggs and bacon or whatever on a mostly dry skillet or griddle. Just keep an eye on it and turn it once and it comes out golden brown. Most skillets and griddles can handle two to three slices of bread. Quick and easy and beats the toasting racks-been doing it for years.
