Starting my build...Advice on platform size

Postby tscarbroughdc » Tue Jun 18, 2013 2:06 pm

Hey Everyone...

First let me say that I love this site! I actually ran into someone at the local state park who had used this site to build HIS teardrop!! So neat to run into other people who actually found the same place to look for help building their camper!

With that said, I am about to start building my teardrop/benroy camper and would like to get advice on the platform sizes.

I bought a HBF 4x8 utility trailer. Ive bought 3 sheets of marine grade plywood for the floor. I also bought SEVERAL different plans from the internet. The more I research, the more confused I get! haha...

I want to get this done as fast as I can so my kids and I can spend the night in it before the end of summer. Im torn as to whether I want to just build a 4x8 or try a 5x10! I LOVE the idea of a 5X10, but wonder if I would have to move the axle and how much more trouble it would be...

Can anyone please give me some idea...Im going to bolt my trailer together tonight/tomorrow and hopefully start on the flooring this weekend.

My first and most urgent question is:

WHAT SIZE CAMPER SHOULD I BUILD!?!?!
(4x8 or 5x10 - is it any harder to build the 5x10 than the 4x8 or is it just a matter of measuring differently. Im probably going to use the Ty Dean plans.)

I built a 5x8 and I'm happy I did. If you build a 5 wide trailer, are buying a 5 wide trailer frame?

I built a 4x10, and when I build the next one, it will be a 5x10 or 6x10. I am 6' tall, and there is no room between us for our son.

I bought the HBF 4x8 heavy duty trailer.

Im trying to decide whether to make it 4x8 or 5x10...And really if its a lot of trouble to build it 5x10!

It will just be me and my two 5 year olds. Im planning on making my place to sleep and then a bunk bed for them to sleep on. I doubt I will be setting up an entertainment system and what not, because we use our phones and iPads for watching tv on and I will be staying in campgrounds and parks with wifi and such...

I guess my BIG question is, if I make my teardrop a 5x10 on a 4x8 trailer, will I have to mess with axle placement? That is my main concern...Im not a handy man at all!

I guess that answers my question...4x8 just seems too small!

I think I will attempt a 5x10 benroy from the Ty Dean plans I have...

I could search this forum forever and still not find the thread that I need/want...If anyone happens to know a thread on building a 5x10 Ty Dean (Benroy) campe on a 4x8 HBF trailer, I would really appreciate the link to it! Either Im not good with the search feature on this site or its not very good...Either way I pull up a lot of trash when trying to search for what I need...

Honestly I would recommend you return the 4x8 and get a 5 wide trailer to make the build simpler. Building a 5 footer on a 4 foot frame would put the body over the tires.

Based on the poll where 38% wanted it wider, I've gone for a 5' wide
