Yesterday got a really clean No chip on the top 228F, some paint wear on the bottom rim, and one rip or split in the coleman label on front. Dated 10 69 $30 craigslist local guy.

Today I picked up in Stillwater OK a New never used 228H, never had a mantle on it. in box ( box is shot and been cut to let the handle fold to the side.), two faint little scratches on the back of the tank. Perfect Coleman label. Dated 4 74 $30 spent 25 in gas to get it. Craigslist.

In the bottom of the box was this Coleman unused fuel funnel. Now all I need is a 228E and a birthday lantern, oh maybe a few military ones. ha hahaha

Nice score there. Some of my favorite users are the F models. And not many people will give you guff if you modify them. The Fs are the newest I have in the 220/228 line. Someday I should find the H J and K.

Ya I like the Big hats one. Need the 228E and just saw in another thread there is a J. Now you say there is a K, Oh man this is never going end.

I want to get a few 228f and Do them in black with etched globes and a Witches Face on them . I want a orange 200A with a pumpkin etched into the glass and one purple ( or green mybe both ) with the Kool aid guy face on them. Darren does a new job on them.

I went to a few antique stores today. One store had the only Sears big hat I have seen in the wild. He wanted $65 for it. Sure was pretty. He had a couple of other green lanterns and a 200A as well. He also had a 502 stove with the heat drum on it (the first one of those I have come across). All of his stuff was in nice shape and priced like it. Then I went into an outdoor/military surplus store up the street and say a nice m1940 stove. On my way out, my eye caught sight of a mil-spec lantern displayed on a high shelf. Not for sale, just for display. Lots of cool stuff, but no one has a waffle dogger. Oh well. The hunt continues.

Question on cleaning tanks and rebuild valve.

I Ok guys /gals /others

Just got it in the mail today. A mil spec lantern ? It is a 4 quadrant glass one ( no marking on the glass ). It had this on the bottom

Tank is slightly dirty inside, but not bad. I reshaped the pump leather and soaked in oil, so it is now pumping and holds pressure. Valve seems to work. Any advice before trying to light this one up. First gass one

Also got a 200a that appears to has gasoline init. I rinsed out the tank a few time with coleman fuel and it still nasty and black inside the tank. It did light up, but the valve area get damp while in use ( might be seeping ) I can see fuel on the shaft behind the RED knob. I guessing it need to be rebuild, new seals ?? it is a 1973 200a

any advise?

Try just tightening the packing nut on the valve first. It will probably seal right up. A little vinegar or carb cleaner and some BB's should work to clean out the gunk in the fount.

I just watched a youtube video of a guy cleaning out a motorcycle gas tank with barings. I‘ll have to try the BB’s. I’m gonna take the whole thing apart. I got this lantern for experimenting and learning on. Did not want to mess up my Birthday lanterns, or the burgundy. This one is going to be a Pumpkin. The Military one I plan to use and abuse. It has a big dent on the fount.

Has anyone treated the is side of their Founts after cleaning? There a few products on the market for treading old gas tanks. Supposed to keep them from rusting again.

I wouldn't. Most of those treatments are a skin like barrier coat and unless the base material is in really good clean condition, they can flake and cause problems (I had a bunch of problems with the "restored" saddle tanks that were retro installed on my scoot).

My experience with my 228E is that anything loose, regardless of size will create clogging issues in the generator.

Do the shukka shukka with the BB's and rinse it out well to get all of the rust/crud out.

The vinegar makes sense (mild acid), but I guess that would need to be neutralized with water then immediately dried (maybe mild heat?) to prevent flash rust. Maybe a splash of WD-40 to displace water, then rinse with fuel?

That being said, I am a novice/beginner Coleman collector/restorer, so listen to the experts here (wagondude, Kirk, Randy/Wolffarmer, Doug Hodder, et al). Their input helped me a lot.
