Trailer lights/ Standerd to LED

Postby nuyork212 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 10:00 am

Hello all:

My trailer has standard lights. How hard what it be to change over to LED lights?

Those LED replacement bulbs work fine in modern tail/stop light fixtures. My 1948 trailer uses the same incandescent bulbs (#47 I believe) but they are socketed to burn base down, so the LEDs face up, not out, which makes them ineffective

If someone knows of a similar taillight replacement meant for "burn base down" use, please let me know.

Most the time, you just need to take out your incandescent bulb and look at the way it is made. Then, purchase LEDs with the same style base. Auto back-up light replacements are usually the closest to the brightness of incandescent. Please note that I am assuming that you are talking about interior lights and not exterior, road lights because you simply called them "Trailer lights". Discount the above if you are looking for exterior, road lights because those may work differently.

Lots of folks make this pigtail type of LED array. I might be workable into your application ?

I like some of the options in the first link, but I don't think the second one is quite my style :R

Thanks for that first link, one of those might solve my problem, given that my tail lights mount at an angle.

I've had good dealings with http://www.superbrightleds.com/.

Maybe you can find something to suit your sockets there.

Something that I do to get more "punch" out of my taillights is to spray the interiors of them in a gloss white. It bounces a lot of light out of them. I don't have a before and after pic, but it is a very noticeable difference. For some reason, it seems that all the newer taillights are molded in black plastic. Black doesn't reflect worth beans. I don't think you are going to find a vertical mounted LED bulb for a taillight, all the aftermarket replacement bulbs are the standard 1157 type mounts, which will work for a horizontal mounted socket since an LED is more of a directional type light.
