Super-dumb newbie mattress question.

Hi everyone! I am new around here and have searched the threads for the answer, but cannot find it anywhere.

So, here goes: I am having my 5x10 TD built by TeardropsNW in Salem, OR. Anyhow, the mattress that he supplies comes in three pieces.... seems like my super-princess bones might not be too happy landing on one of the cracks all night, Anyhow, I have seen posts of people using "normal" mattresses for inside of the TD. The question is: How in the HECK do you get it in the TD door?

My second option would be to get some kind of cover to go over the three panels.... anyone have a good tip for that? FWIW, I hate memory foam. I like a nice firm sleep surface!

Well, for the foam ones, you roll them up. Maybe use a few straps to hold it rolled up and maybe compress it more. A spring type would have to be built in. An air mattress like a Sleep Number bed could be inflated after putting it inside the TD.

A memory foam mattress usually comes rolled up. For them, don't remove it from the package until it is in the TD.

A regular mattress that you normally see on a bed won't fit in the door. My mattress is a foam mattress from Ikea. It came rolled up and fit nicely through the door.

An inner spring futon mattress will bend/roll/twist and fit through a fairly small door.

Squished mine in,, the cheap ones bend pretty easy. Gave my husband somethign to watch.

I have a 3 piece foam matress that I made from a single large matress. On top of that I have a memory foam matress topper. I have never noticed the cracks through the topper.

There are both memory foam and regular foam toppers. You can usually by foam to fit in any density or thickness you lie from either a mattress company, upolster supplier or end of the run fabric place. We have both in Reno so i would think they are not too hard to find either locally or on the net. Search for either "custom mattress" " foam cut to size" or " mill end remnants". Our local pace is actually called MillEnd Fabrics.

But you should also be able to find an egg crate non memory foam topper for fairly cheap from walmart or target type place.

Then as other posters have suggested, just roll it up and shove it in. With a tear you just need to think outside the box a little!

Nevadatear: I LOVE your galley. Especially the sliding doors on the upper cabinets. Makes a ton of sense.... I think I may incorporate that idea into my galley build!

I am tired of the foam mattress in the barn so I went on Craigs list last wednesday and purchased a very nice very thick futon for the CRA gathering.

Since the barn is in storage 15 miles away I tossed it in the caboose that evening and took a short snooze.

I love it !

I did see one build where the lower galley was a removeable panel so you could slide a mattress in, or other stuff to carry. So it does seem possible if you're wed to the idea of a regular mattress.

This the mattress topper I used from Walmart. Mine is in three pieces as well and with this you cant tell.

We have a 3 piece foam mattress that came with our trailer that the DH relates to sleeping on a rock. It is very firm, which I like. We have a simple foam topper on it that we got at Costco that works really well. Soft enough for DH and still very firm for me.

I found a foam distributor here (All Size Foam, Vernon, CA) close to work. I took the bed dimensions with me, picked the type and thickness of foam and had it custom cut into three sections, total about $75 bucks. At another outlet nearby I purchased two twin size bedspreads for $12 bucks each and went home and made covers for each section. It was pretty easy to do, like wrapping a package. Hand stitched them with button hole thread (thicker and stronger than ordinary thread) and they were done in about a day. Because the bed is in three sections it is sooooo easy to clean everything at the end of a trip. As for comfort the foam I chose is 4 inch thick and firm, very comfy.

My mattress is custom made by a mattress maker and is both thick and fairly inflexible.
When I take it out I run a couple of webbing tie downs, the ones with the ratchet tightening device, and I force it into a U shape, even though it does not like that shape!
Then I can pull it out the door (I only have one door). I don't miss having a 2nd door except when i take the mattress out!
It is not easy nor fast, but it happens.
