Lunchbox's "Lunchbox"

Postby Lunchbox7985 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 4:43 pm

ive actually gotten a decent amount done, just been too lazy to start this thread, so here goes

Image
this all started with a sketch while i was bored at work. although the idea had been going around in my head for a while, i couldn't quite compact the design enough to make it cost effective. we like to tent camp, but i like to be a little between wiping your butt with leaves, and the $500,000 rv with a big screen and satellite television.

this is the general idea of our current camping endeavors.

Image
Image
Image

so we have our "kitchen" in the back of my mothers blazer (she so graciously lets us borrow it on occasion), and do most of the cooking on the picnic table. inside the tent we have a power strip for cell phone chargers, a fan, and a laptop to watch a movie on at night, or in case of rain. (and my hillbilly air conditioner, which ill post in another tread)

so the sketch becomes a 3d model thanks to sketchup (an absolutely awesome program btw)

Image
Image
Image

so underneath the counter is a mini fridge with seperate freezer, above that represents the camp stove, on the shelf is a microwave, and the thing that looks like a sink, is a sink (go figure) the shelf will come off and sit on the floor where i will stand for towing and storage, and the area to the left of the fridge will be cabinet space for foodstuffs, i have some other ideas floating around for cabinets attached to the lid, but i kinda wing it, hence why the sketchup drawing looks like its unfinished. i got antsy and had to start my build.

Image
so heres my son and i assembling the frame of the trailer from harbor freight (note the toy plastic hammer, and ignore the mess in the background  )

Image
got the suspension on

Image
and there she is.

Image
Image
Image
Image
then i added stabilizer jacks to the back, and a tounge jack to the front, first time welding in over a decade, but its like riding a bike.

Image
Image
and this is how it sits, got it framed, need to pick up a few more screws and brackets, so ignore the crooked parts, they arent screwed down yet. next step is wiring.

all treated lumber, coated screws, and stainless carriage bolts holding the walls to the frame.found out after everything was cut that my tape measure was half an inch short, so things arent lining up perfectly, but i dont think the little gaps here and there are going to be a big deal, im going to skin it with plywood anywho.

got one of those drinking water spouts picked out for my sink, as well as an on demand pump.
Image

and ill probably make some sort of trapezoid shaped awning that folds up inside the lid. i plan on closing the lid when we leave the camp site, and at night, so i gotta keep it simple.

well thanks for reading, this is probably going to be a several month project, so ill keep it updated as i go.

****update 7/10/13****
got the electrical boxes in place, and got the sink mounted to the counter

since im not going to have hot water, just a simple drinking water faucet on the right, and to fill the left hole in the sink a counter mounted soap dispenser.

Uh, no, sorry, can't. Is that a mid '60's Chevy Impala or Caprice with rally wheels? Maybe a big block car?

Do tell. :D

So this is going to be a real chuck wagon. Will you be needing a step? I can't tell how high it is.

i designed it with enough room to stand in one corner of it. i will need a 2 step stool to get in and out of it easily. i played around with ideas of standing outside of it, and even got some good input from others on here, but i really didnt have the money or patience for the more complex design involved in it.

added some more pics to the first post, so you dont have to search through the inevitable multiple pages to look at it start to finish.

I would encourage you to post your follow-up progress in line as a reply. That way the time line will flow much easier and people won't have a hard time figuring out where they left off. It seems manageable now, and your project might go very quickly (so maybe not such an issue), but these things have a way of snowballing. Ask me how I know (hint: TPCE).

got a good bit done on my last two days off

Image
got a 4x8 sheet of this fiberglass/plastic stuff. pretty thin and durable

Image
Image
Image
Image
got the outlet boxes cut out, and the counter almost in there, going to have a piece over the fridge to make the counter L shaped.

still have some trim work to do, corners and such. then i think next step is to run my wires, then i should be ready to skin it, and lastly (since the water tanks are going to be in a small box on the tounge) is the plumbing/pump/accumulator tank. then paint, finishing touches and all that jazz.

im not thinking im almost done or anything, but i think ive worked out everything at least, and ive got the counter and fridge sitting in there, so ive got a definite yes on my clearances. its nice to have the rest of it laid out in my head.

oh and i almost forgot the faux marble linoleum tile floor, i was stoked when i saw that, as i orginally wanted to splurge for real marble tiles since i only needed about 9 sq feet, but i got the whole floor for $9.
