What size inverter??

Postby Glenn Quarles » Mon Jul 01, 2013 6:11 pm

Friends, what size inverter do I need to run a small TV set? I tried my 400 and it didn't work. What size wire do I need to run from the battery to the inverter?

Thanks!

Watt=volts x amps

You need to know what the startup draw go the appliance is, as long as your inverter is larger than that number is should start up.

It's also important to know that some devices require a true sin wave, most inverters produce a modified sin wave, and that can cause problems with digital electronics....mostly laptops etc.

As far as wire size,it depends on how far you will run....10 amp draw over 10 feet needs a different wire than 10 amps at 2 feet. An Internet search for "wire size chart 12 volt" will give you several hits....

Wattage draw

Lets start with the easy ones ...

60W light bulb - 60W
100W light bulb - 100W
Now some more common appliances...

Toaster : 800-1500W
Microwave : 600-1500W
Dishwasher : 1200-1500W
Washing Machine : 500W
Vacuum Cleaner : 200-700W
Iron : 1000W
Electric Mower : 1500W
Clothes dryer : 4000W
Ceiling Fan : 10-50W
Table Fan : 10-25W
Electric Blanket : 200W
Hair Blow dryer : 1000W
Electric Shaver : 15W
Laptop Computer : 20-50W
Desktop Computer : 80-150W
TV (19" colour) : 70W
Clock radio : 1W
9" disc sander : 1200W
3" belt sander : 1000W
Fridge / Freezer : 500W
25" colour TV : 150W
Electric Kettle : 2000W
Power Shower : 240W

A 400 watt inverter should run your TV easily.

They are fuse protected against reverse polarity did you hook it up
backwards and blow the fuse ????
Growing older but not up !

Is your TV a LCD or a CRT (tube) TV? If you have an LCD TV, a 400 watt inverter should work. A CRT TV uses a lot more power. Some of the smaller LCD TV's use 12 volts of DC power. These TV's have separate converter that you use to plug it in at home.

Not mentioned as a possible problem is that some TV's don't play well with an MSW (modified sine wave)[read square wave) inverter. We have a 22" LCD TV DVD player in our tear and it draws 23 W (measured), it does work with a small inverter and it will work with our true sine wave inverter.
