Re-covering An Umbrella

Anyone done this? I have some Sunbrella and a cheap large umbrella(golf size). Thought I would recover with those wind flaps like on market umbrellas. Make a beach tote to match. What kind of thread would you use on Sunbrella?

Sorry Sharon...I only work in cotton haven't played with Sunbrella other than 1 Bimini top for a boat, and I borrowed a commercial sewing machine for that and help from a buddy with an awning business. I let Marti do all that work for me now, however I'd think a UV resistant exterior type poly thread would be best for the sewing. Doug

Well, I Googled and found several blogs on re-covering an umbrella. Each one just used pretty fabric and waterproofed it. I think I will do the same and save the Sunbrella for something relating to the camper, since it matches my awning. I'm thinking a Moda fabric in orange polka dots with a black wind release. This is really just for shade on the beach. I burn easily and never sunbathe. Wish I could cover my beach chair to match. At least easily.

Another project I want to do!!! I have too many. And being the world class procrastinator I am, I never get to cross anything off my list.

Finished it!! Not too hard. More time consuming than I expected because I made it with a wind release at the top.

I love the Moda fabric. Didn't get it as taut as I would have liked. For two reasons. I made my own pattern instead of taking apart the old. And it's cotton, which stretches. Had to wait on the waterproofing as it recommended drying in the sun. Hadn't seen the sun in weeks around here. The bottle of waterproofing was suppose to cover 80 sq ft, give or take. I used just about the whole thing on this.

Ready for the beach next week. Won't have the matching beach tote done though.
