2" ball and 2 5/16 coupler---HELP !!!

Postby rinn69 » Sat Jul 06, 2013 9:31 am

I need to tow my empty 7x14 CT from TX to IA and the rental truck has a 2" ball and my CT is a 2 5/16 coupler.......anyone ever rig something or know how to make an adapter?? The ball is welded to the truck, so no easy fix there. Any suggestions?? (other than the obvious)

rinn69, Howdy;

Take the truck back and ask them for one with a 2 5/16" ball.
Tell them you need/require a more 'Manly' truck.....

Can you put on a different coupler or is that welded on too?

What about renting a trailer with a 2" ball, and putting your CT on the trailer ?

Unless the trailer weighs 10,000 pounds, best to get a common, normal 2" ball and coupler. If your tow vehicle breaks down, just about any good sam can tow your trailer for you then. :worship:

Most hitches ? That the ball attaches to only support about 7,000 lbs and 700 lbs tongue weight.

I've been thing to upgrade to a 10k model - very solid but $80-90 for that :oops: :oops:

They weld them on for a couple of reasons. 1, it cannot be swapped or come lose, and the main reason, they do not want the heavier trailers that use a 2 5/16 ball to be towed by their vehicles. Do not ever try and tow a 2 5/16 trailer with a 2 inch ball. I speak from experience. Our scout troop trailer is the larger ball and I hooked up to it without changing my receiver to the correct size. I made it a block before it popped off and dented the bumper of my van. Lucky I was taking it home to service it so it was empty. I had a decal made for the troop trailer the next day to remind me and others that the trailer was 2 5/16. Good luck with your new trailer.
