Attaching wire to studs

Postby qwerty11 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 7:22 am

I would like to tack my overhead wire to the studs prior to putting the wood panels up. Any recommendation on what to use? Best I can come up with is stapling them, but am afraid I might clip the wire.

Are you talking romex or 12v? For romex, you can use the all-metal staples, for 12v, I would suggest the ones that look like two nails connected by a plastic bridge. Both are available at big box home improvment stores. Tearing the jacket is a concern if you miss with the hammer, if that happens check to make sure you did not expose the conductors, wrap in electrical tape and try again. You just want a slight hold on the wire, not so tight you could tow the tear with the wire.

For romex, I used the plastic clamps with two small nails that Kharn mentioned. Install carefully so they are just touching. For my DC wiring, I used the plastic cable clamps shown in this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-STEREN-400- ... 20d4ed9a8a
As you can see, they are quite inexpensive, easy to install, and really do a good job of cleaning up your DC wiring throughout your camper. They also come in several sizes to accommodate one or more wires running together.

Why not run the wires through the studs?
I'm not picturing what you are suggesting. If you tack the wires to the studs and then try to skin them with panels, won't there be a lump where the wire and the staple are??
