Stabilizers and jack stands

Postby suzart24 » Sat Jul 13, 2013 12:26 am

Does anyone out there have any creative ideas for stabilizers or jack stands to keep things steady when set up?
I have a bolt together trailer from Northern Tools and was told to put some diagonal bracing on it. I was thinking of doing that on the back, and mounting my jack stands on them.
It aint' the gettin' there,

Hey Doug, beautiful dog in your pic! I was going the same route with my tear when I was building it but at the end I want with the aluminium stackable stands I bought at Walmart. Light weight and easy to store.

I found these at walmart also, they work great, just remember to bring some boards to set them on in soft soil

I used the Atwood stabilizer jacks mounted along the rear frame on my NT 5X8. Drill two holes in the frame for each one and they're done. They are self contained and fold up out of the way when not in use. No need to store any other parts or tools. I do keep a small wood block to set under each one if the ground is soft. You will find some discussion on the forum as to which direction to mount them (some prefer diagonally for greatest stability but that requires a little more work for mounting plates). I've found them to be quite stable in this configuration. They run about $40 a pair on Ebay.

Thanks Cliff and larry,

I have had both those types in the past. I will robably go with something that mounts to the frame, as I see storage space at a premium.

I added the BAL type stabilizer jacks to each corner of my chassis before actually starting the TD build. the 750# capacity of each jack was of great aid in stabilizing/leveling the trailer during my build. These aren't the least expensive but they've worked very well through almost 7yrs & more'n 20K miles of use. One (left rear) also stood up pretty well to a rear end collision in 2010. Just required straightening of one screw tab after chassis straightening/repair. If you're putting 'diagonal' bracing on your chassis that'd make an excellent place to bolt up the BAL type jacks. The only thing I'd change on mine would be mounting them diagonal. We get very good stability but I'd still mount 'em diagonal... They're also strong enough to achieve minor 'leveling' in normal use. The small 'hand crank' doesn't take up much room & I've modified an old 'socket wrench' to fit my cordless drill for even easier raising/lowering ;)

ThanX Harvey,

I've seen that type, but never used them. Maybe scrounge up some used ones.
