Brush it off?

Postby Duckdaddy » Mon Jul 15, 2013 6:17 am

I need to remove the paint from the front lower tread plate panel on my CC. I have a 5" grinder with a fine wire brush wheel on it.
Will it mar it too much, or is there a paint remover that wont hurt the aluminum?

any paint stripper will work I use to use paint stripper on my airplanes
when ever they needed repainted, I used a wooded scrapper to remove
the paint once it bubbled up I used wood instead of metal scrapper because
I didn't want to scratch the aluminum skin your diamond plate
any brush, metal scrapper should be ok.

In furniture refinishing I used paint stirrers to scrape the paint, I would cut them into three pieces wait and wait and let the chemical do the work, scraping off the paint. The aluminum can be returned to its original shine with aluminum polish. and a buffing wheel. Using metal will only scratch and leave permanent marks and scratches. In the world of metal aluminum is considered a softer metal. My pots and pans I use in the Kitchen is called aluminum clad on stainless steel. I have used Brillo pads on them for 35 years but I can polish them up with polish and they look like new. Hot soapy water and applied heat doesn't help them keep a shine. So what pete said I agree with.

I just stripped paint off an aluminum trailer window using "aircraft paint stripper" from the auto store, and it worked very quickly and the aluminum looked fine afterwards. Interestingly, it says "not for use on aircraft" on the spray can.

That aircraft stripper works great. It requires water to neutralize it. Put some plastic under the trailer, scrape off the bubbled paint (plastic scrapers or body filler applicators work well), then wash down with low pressure water and a fine scotchbrite pad (move the plastic with the large pile of goo first).
