Looking for some ideas on how to finish the counter in the galley.

Originally I was thinking ceramic tile, but come to find out that tiling on top of plywood is a 'No-No'. Any suggestions / recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I'm not sure what your basing your statement on but there are many of us that have tile on plywood with thousands of miles on our teardrops and have not had any issues.

The only thing that I'm going off is what I've read about plywood not liking the thinset and tiles lifting up over time...these results are from doing searches with google about tiling over plywood. Admittedly I have no real world experience and am a complete Newbie on the subject. Did you do anything special to the plywood before tiling?

Thanks for the input!

After reading through some more build threads it looks like if I add another layer of 1/2 plywood on my counter top and use PL glue to hold the tiles down I should be good. I ordered my tiles on Friday so they should be here this week and I can start finishing up the galley. I've been working on the slide outs for everything in the galley and I'm starting to realize (even more so) how bad of a wood worker I am. I took me a long time to get everything stained and sealed up with spar varnish but it turned out as I was hoping. The dutch oven sits in holes that I drilled in the base and the box next to it will have a lid and hold kitchen utensils. I also got the cabinet over the foot area half done as well.

Your galley under-counter space looks well thought-out.

Thanks for the comments!

I got the interior about done...waiting to get the fan in and wire switches and lights. You can start to see my "Tiki" theme with the cabinet doors...more on that later. I also started to put the skin on...got both sides on and working on the roof this week. Hopefully will have everything skinned and patched up ready for paint by the end of next week...then it's on to the hatch, doors, roof rack and tongue box. Wish me luck! :D

Ok, it's been a loooonnnnnnnggggggg time since I posted an update. Life kind-of took me in different directions for a while. I'm back at it now and working to finish things up. Since the last post I've built the tongue box, skinned and painted the exterior, started adding the aluminum trim, finishing up the galley details and will lay the tiles next weekend some time.

I also built the hatch...then built it again! The plywood that I bent to skin the hatch didn't like to be bent and sprung back and took the hatch spares out of whack by 2". Hatch 2.0 has flexible plywood so no spring back this time!

I also built the doors, but I got a little squeeze out on the black marine glue that I used and I'm now regretting that I didn't clean it up as I went. Any recommendations on how to clean this stuff would be greatly appreciated! :)

Very nice sliding trays in your galley.

On the black squeeze out, I would try to follow the inside edge of the trim with a utility knife cutting just thru the sealant and not scratching the aluminum; then use a piece of wood with a chisel point to try and scrape the extra bits up. Using a wood scrapper shouldn't put the aluminum at risk, but it will be a tedious task, for sure.

Making some progress and coming down the home stretch. Working on some electrical, finishing up the tongue box, the trailer hitch and some stuff with the hatch. Anyone got a suggestion on where to mount the bottle opener? Inside the galley or outside of the galley?
