KCStudly wrote:Thanks for the suggestions and kind words, Sharon. Were you using water based poly? Mine is oil based and the wool pad did not include any instructions for preparation, just cleaning instructions (i.e. rinse, do not soak).

...Oil based polyurethane alkyd resin. The instructions with the paint were to spray on or use either a brush or a lambskin roller. The best I could find was lambswool. The Lambswool roller instructions said to wet the roller first. I was nervous about whether it would work with the paint; but, once wet, it did great. I also tried it without wetting and that's when the hairs pulled out. I think the water must help the paint to "let go" of the lambswool.

It's all "water over the dam", though, as your brush finish looks great. Don't change now! Stick with it.

PS. Just for the fun of it, I tried a foam brush with the paint, on a test piece. The foam began to disintegrate after a couple swipes and left a dull finish in its wake.

Thanks again Sharon. I hope I can make it look as good in person as it looks in the photos. Wouldn't want to get anyone's expectations up too high.

2 more hrs., a second coat of poly on the doors, finished sanding and scuffing the floor, including those problem areas, and a third (hopefully final) coat of poly on the floor.

I tried to lay it on thinner and more evenly this time, although I did not thin the pot (used it straight out of the can as recommended).

I think I may have just put it on a little on the heavy side before, especially in the middle of the floor where the panels join and where I tended to start my brush strokes. On this last coat I tried to start more in the middle of each side section and brush toward the center and outside; and checked for dry areas by sighting a glancing look toward the reflection as I went, before it got too tacky.

No pics; it looks the same but better.

Kev is a happy camper. It's not perfect: there are a few sanding scratches visible here and there; a couple of very small spots where I just started to break thru the stain; and of course the panel joints will always show; but I think it looks great and enough is enough. It is just a camper after all. If I don't show the warts to you you will probably never see them, so that's about as good as I can hope to achieve.

Sometimes I think, "I should have made her sleep on the ground in a tent".

KC, even if it were perfect to start, (which I'm betting will be about 99%) in a couple camping trips,it'll have "happy travel scars" along with some wonderful camping stories. After all, you are building it for camping, not as a showroom-only piece. Or, will it just sit in the garage?

Oh yeah, I get it. It will be used! It's just that dammed detail thing that I get so caught up in. Remember, part of this exercise is pushing my personal skills envelope, and seeing a thing through to completion. I'm doing the best that I reasonably can to prove it to myself that I can. Not perfect, but 'good' quality. Not perfect, but justifying the materials that I have chosen to use.

Using the memory of and tribute to my father as the spark that lit the fire is only a starting point for the personal motivation.

Maybe I should have just built a chuck wagon trailer to haul camping gear behind the Jeep? Could have had it done in a couple of weekends/weeks/months (select one), and for a lot less money. Please learn from my mistake, or be motivated by what I have decided to do. You pick. ;) :D

There is a saying that I like: "You can have it good, fast, cheap; pick two." In this case I only want it one way, "good"; cheap and fast went out the window in season one. It's called "Project Creep" (or "Scope Creep").

Thanks for participating. I appreciate all of the comments and the different perspectives. It helps keep me on an even keel and motivates me to find my way thru this project.

p.s. There's no room in my garage, but after all of the effort I have put in, maybe I should prioritize enough effort to clear out a spot so it doesn't have to sit out in the winter!

KC , we’ve always taken the TPCE build as not an attempt to build a perfect TD , but an example of what could be done using superior engineering and fabricating skills  8) ... More a Personal achievement than just another a camper build ... You have done some AMAZING things .... It’s going to be a Beauty !!! :applause: Best clear out a space in the garage ... or do like the Harley owners and store it in the Living room ....   Too NICE to keep outside .... like Furniture !!!  ;)

I happened to be poking around in an old User Pole thread about what you would do different if you were to build again and Gage said something that really struck a chord with me; much like the attitude I’ve been trying to express above.

Gage wrote:Remember, when building your teardrop, build it with pride and take your time. Just because someone builds theirs in 3 months doesn't mean you also have to. Think things out and be happy with the end results.
Have a good day,
Gage

Maybe I’ve quoted this before. Déjà vu anyone?

Please don't anyone take this the wrong way. If your goal includes building fast for one reason or another, and you are able to achieve that goal, that is very admirable! It's just that these words hit it right on the head how I am feeling about TPCE right now. :D

Finally the weather broke and the heat wave passed. Tuesday was blue skies and thunder heads.
Image
Didn’t quite catch the classic anvil shape in this “hang the camera out the side window as the cop drives by pic”, but… PUNCH BUG MOCHA LATTE CONVERTIBLE. LOL

As mentioned Wednesday, I had put a second coat of polyurethane on the door inners and a third on the floor top.

Thursday morning and afternoon the temps were down right chilly. Woke up to sub 60’s, and later when arriving home Yvette had closed a bunch of windows because the furnace was running (prime time thermostat set at 68). Didn’t need the fan or open windows at Mecca.

The doors look pretty good despite some orange peel texture.
Image
The “six pack abs” reflection is of the plastic sheeting strung from the ceiling joists with the fluorescent lights above.

Orange peel is a little more apparent from this angle w/o flash.
Image

Doesn’t quite pass the Doug Hodder quality test (can’t read the serial number)…
Image

… but maybe close enough?
Image

I’m happy with the floor. Shortly after these pics, because I was concerned about the poly lifting, I scored the tape line lightly with the razor knife and peeled back the tape. It quickly became apparent that the tape was peeling back just fine (despite multiple coats) without needing to score.
Image
Image
(Again, light squares are reflections of the ceiling plastic drape.)
Image

The more I look at these pics, the more I think I will let the doors set up good and hard (couple days) and then sand and recoat. The floor is not perfect, but it is a little flatter than the doors and does look a little better. Toss up if it is worth the effort… still won’t be perfect. The work is kind of tedious, but easy and does yield results.
Image
(See all of the “fuzzy” area around the flash glare? That’s little nubs and orange peel.)

Karl and Simon came out to visit at just the right time to help me move the floor off of my stand, and switch to the curb side wall inner. Also set the bulkhead up on the out feed table.

First wet coat on the bulkhead cabin side (had sanded this side less… and camera lens needs cleaning).

With flash the color looks a little more orange than actual.
Image

Without flash the color looks a little drabber than actual.
Image

Curb side wall inner first wet coat of poly.
Image
Image

I am having some reservations about jumping into the finishing before some other steps, like fitting the doors, latches, and strike plates (… but then there is the canvas to consider); spackling the door outers; and rounding over the door frames and jambs for the canvas to wrap over. Not sure how the canvas will terminate at the inner skin of the door, and not sure how the black trim paint will interact with the poly. Maybe I should have done that first and poly’d right over the black.

Here you can see the floor stashed in the pile with the tape removed.
With flash.
Image
Without flash (again, the white splotchy spots are reflections).
Image

Train kept a rollin’ and a couple more hrs added to effort.
