Thank you gentlemen. You are adding fuel to the fire!

I started tonight by blocking the cabin side bulkhead first coat down a tad, gumming up the 220 grit. Don't believe the can label, it is marketing bull trying to minimize what you don't want to hear! It takes way more than 4-6 hrs to cure (try 2 days) and even at 3 coats it is not level (says 2 coats and done). If you put it on dry as a bone maybe, but I am skeptical if you can sand with 220 grit at this stage without burning through the stain!

I managed to get thru that and scuffed it with the greenie pad, but when I started sanding the curb side wall it gummed up even worse, so I called that off.

I did reread the label and found that I had forgotten/not seen that it calls for a wipe down with a rag damped with mineral spirits after sanding. I tried that on the bulkhead after sanding and it helped to knock down some more of the high stuff, so will be doing that hence forth. I’m not worried about adhesion on the previous coats since I did such a good job of mechanically scuffing and it was still not rock hard.

So what to do? Easy, stand the bulkhead up and take another pass at the doors! They had been sitting for 2 days and didn’t clog the paper nearly as badly. Sanded, scuffed, dry wiped and mineral spirit wiped. Coated and tipped off. Checked askance, touched a few small spots on the edges that looked a little dry, and called it a night. I think it will be awesome!

Tomorrow with cool weather I will go back and do the bulkhead and wall. That won’t take too long, so I will shift over to something small like the light switch plates.

Peace.
KC

KC , sometimes you just have to wait till it dries/cures before sanding ... Whatever they write on the can must have been done in Ideal conditions... with our excess Humidity , everything seems to take a little longer to “completely “ dry , if at all .. Something else , try sanding it under cooler conditions , it has been rather HOT there lately as we recall ... Best to just wait and work on something else ... like being a contractor ....

Forgive me if I’m posting too many pictures of the wood finish. I feel like a magpie with a shiny object… just can’t resist taking them. Call it newbie exuberance.

Here is the dollar trick on the galley floor. Maybe later I will cut it with some polish and wax? Probably not, but it is tempting.

And the curb side door after the third coat.

Second wet coat on inside of bulkhead. There are some major sanding scratches in the wood, but they will be inside of the cabinets so not a big deal. Still, I wished I had planned better and not rushed past that step of finish sanding.

Weather is much better but it was still warm up there by this time, so that was it for the day; just a couple of hours of work.

Never say never! Probably not, but maybe. The thought had crossed my mind. Get rid of the last of the little bubble craters and slight orange peel.

On the other hand, it is still just a camper and good enough is good enough, beyond that becomes some sort of obsession, maybe? :?

Thing is it would take it to the next level... but might make some of the warts stand out more.

No, I think this is where I need to stop. Maybe. :FNP

The wood work my buddy Dale does on his boat gets wet sanded, buffed and polished. Looks great, flawless. Then again he is using hard teak and mahogany (IIRC).

She's gonna be a beauty and exuberance is part of the pay-off for all your hard work. Enjoy. You deserve some thrills and bragging rights. :applause:

I'm waiting for some pics of it and you out in the wild!

Thank you Sharon. Yes, I am very excited at how the finish is turning out. Not perfect, but good enough to make me happy about it.

Lots of details yet to attend to. No wild pics anytime soon, but the steps I need to take between now and putting the walls and bulkhead up are becoming fewer and fewer. I'm looking forward to that!

Let's hope that things go more quickly after that, rather than the classic slow down that typically occurs (although I suppose that is unavoidable).

I'm also looking forward to the day that I get to post pics of the whole cabin being lowered thru the floor hatch in the loft. That should blow some minds, ya think?
Sometimes I feel like I am building a 'ship in the bottle', except in the end the ship has to pass thru the neck of the bottle! :worship:  :frightened:

KC... you're going to have to do what? Seriously??!?

I realize that TPCE won't be as heavy as a traditional woodie, but you're still talking several hundred lbs. at least. Is there a hoist or at least a chain fall up there that you'll be using to lower it down, or will you be gathering strong backs and man-handling it down?

not that I wouldn't be following anyway, but now I really have to see how you do this! HOpe you assign someone to photograph the procedure...

Ned, yup seriously. This was the best compromise that I could make. It has allowed me to have free run of half of Karl's loft, not having to put things away each night and not conflicting with Karl's larger projects downstairs. A lot less metal dust and grime, too.

In this pic you can see the stout steel beam and electric cable trolley hoist parked off to one side, and in the next pic it is a little clearer how I ran the plastic sheeting over the beam so that the hoist would still be accessible.

If you look closely in this pic you can see the parting lines in the floor planks where they butt at the hatch. Pull the planks up, remove the insulation and joist hangers, and she will just fit down thru nose first. The building jig I made to support the floor (visible here thru the door opening) will act as an attachment point for guy lines and rigging straps.

With a few people we should be able to keep her from getting too beat up. Hoping for no damage at all. :worship:

Uh huh,

Karl has lots of moving blankets that we can line the hatch with, lots of rigging straps, and we both have rigging experience (although Karl has a lot more than I do).

I can get those heavy cardboard edge protectors left over from stuff that gets shipped into work, and that should help keep the straps from digging into the top corners.

There's about an inch and a half to spare on the width, IIRC.
