Portable garages and heat

Postby bg » Sun Apr 16, 2006 7:21 pm

I've been looking at the various 10x20 'garages' (tarp covered).

Specifically item #666201 from www.samsclub.com

Is it going to be bearable/pratical to use this/work under in 100+ degree TX heat?

I'm open for suggestions/different options.

Just roll up both ends and put a fan or two on one end. It's like working in a hot wind tunnel but then, that's Texas in the summer. Actually mine is set up under trees and well shaded. With the fan it is bearable.

One end of the shelter has doors that are easy to roll up. The other end is a little more work but I use a bungee cord from each corner at the top of the corner poles. I pull the bottom of the oposite corner of the wall to the bungees creating something of a triangle, this triangle is easy for one person to roll up and just tuck the roll behind the bungees.....works for me. :D :D

Good to hear from someone that has one of these. If it's doable down in your area then I should certainly be able to do it here. Though I don't have trees to shade the area I want to put it.

Almost wish that was as option, but until TX real estate reaches California levels... (or vice versa) I'd never be able to afford it.

Thought I was too. Then they offered 20% less than the minimum I required (and some other details). I headed home.

Sure was nice up there. Think we broke 100° here today.

I could not open the link. If it is white, yes, it will be bearable (actually the link opened, but not to a specific item)... if it is a dark color, be prepared to be miserable...... I have a white tarp from sam's that comes with a metal frame, and it quite nice in the summer. White makes a big difference.

Look at it this way. Do you want to work under the sun or in the shade? Seems like a no brainier to me.

Have a good day.

Tom Swenson bought one, but I don't know from where. You definitely want to be careful with this and not buy a piece of crap.

Good point Ira, I've seen some of these shelters that use only 6 legs and they were probably 1 inch tubing. The one I got from Sam's Club has 8 legs of a much larger diameter tubing, and all 4 walls were included, the side walls even have windows..........

It seems well enough made to hold up for the duration of a TD construction project, even on Tear Drop Time...... :D

I have had one up for almost 3 years now. I keep the Jeep in it. It's held up good. But I also live in the woods and it doesn't get direct sunlight.

I got mine for $150 at Ocean State Job Lot in May. It sheltered my TD project until early December. I tore it down when the frame started to buckled due to water accumulating on the roof.

In my view, the shelter was worth it. But, only because I got it dirt cheap. I needed it to last ling enough for me to get my tear completed and it was cheaper and more convient than renting a garage.

Northern Tool has a quanset hut shapped "garage-in-a-box" shelter for $350 that they say is suitable for 4-season use. I've been considering that one as a perminent home for my tear.

Oh yeah, it was veryt hot in there on sunny summer days.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Think I may to later in the year to buy something a bit heavier duty that'll last longer, or just wait to build a more permanent garage.

I've now got two end to end. The first one lasted for 5 years before I lost the canopy in 60 mph wind gust. I live in the high desert so it is always windy (well most of the time). The replacement canopy only cost me $30 and I expect it'll last just as long. I might just think about taking the canopy down durning our severe wind season. Then maybe it'll last even longer, or I'll have it longer.

Have a good day.
