Hello Everybody

Well, the trailer is purchased so I guess my camper build adventure has begun. My camper will be extremely utilitarian and cheap. A bit of a change from the fantastic builds I have been reading through on this site. We have a very nice camper the wife and I enjoy. I am an engineer by trade but my hobby is photography and I take numerous 1 - 3 day trips by myself each year. I have been camping out of the back of our SUV which works fine but having the trailer will give me more space. Also, if I don't need the 4 wheel drive I can pull it with my car for better gas mileage.

My plan is just a simple 4 x 8. I got a great deal on a 1700lb HF trailer, assembled with a jack, from a someone that never got any further in their build. I have already decided I am foregoing the rounded curves. I am also not having a fancy galley, a simple shelf and my plastic bins will work just fine. My woodworking skills are very basic and so will this build. I am going to have a minimum of time and money invested so in a couple years I will rebuild it if need be.

I think I will name it the campin' coffin build. :)

OK, a few more details. I live in west Michigan, a little town called Lake Odessa. Married, 56, 5 kids, 12 grandkids. Like I mentioned engineer by trade, hobby is photography. I shoot sports/action and wildlife. We have an area in northern Michigan called Pigeon River that I like to spend time in. I spend a full week there every year chasing big bull elk during the rut and then as many weekends as I can get away with throughout the rest of the year. Camp at least twice during the winter.

Welcome Cantputt

My last big trip I stopped off at the Grand Canyon for two day in April. On the last day I meet two guys there, both were amateurs photographers, both cursing the fact the clouds dissipated before the sun came up totally washing out the scene. These guy drove for days to get there hoping on the right lighting and weather conditions. One camped in his SUV, other in a Jeep and tent. I hope you have better luck when you are out shooting wildlife.

For a camper to fit your needs my I suggest the Nano Weekender. This campers are designed for a 4x8 base, uses a single sheet of plywood for the sides so no splicing to get bigger sheets or buying 5x8 $$ sheets. Simple galley. Easy to build flat angles no bending wood. This is a one of Mike’s many planes. Not sure if anyone has build one as of yet but two guys are looking into the design. Other camper along this same line are Weekenders, Rockhoppers and the Sunhopper. All are bigger but built using the same simple idea. Take a few min to click on the hall of fame gallery link at the top of the main page for so many picture of nice campers your head will spin.

GL in picking out your favorate and have fun building.

Thanks Junkboy. I have been going thru the design looking for ideas, this will really help to narrow the search.
