Out Back Steak House Aussie Fries?

I know there's some Aussie's on the forum,Question is...Do they realley eat fries of this type in australia? They taste great...Or is this just a made up food item for the American restraunt Makerket Place...

Outback Steakhouse Aussie Fries


1 - 2 lb. bag of Frozen French Fries
1 Cup shredded Colby Jack cheese
6 pieces of Bacon, cooked
24 Fl. Oz. Peanut Oil (can be reused later; store
in refrigerator)

Divide the fries into half, and use the other half later.
Heat oil to 350 degrees. If you do not have a thermostat, make sure
the oil is hot enough, so that when you set a french fry in there it
will cook immediately. If the french fry sinks to the bottom, and
barely bubbles, it is not hot enough. Fry the potatoes in small
batches, they are done when they are golden brown, and float to the
top of the skillet. ( I like to use a Dutch Oven). Be sure to drain
the potatoes on paper towels. You can keep them warm in the oven
while the other fries are done.

When all french fries are done cooking, and drained place them onto
a platter. Salt the french fries if you like, and sprinkle on cheese
and cooked bacon. Pop these back into a warm oven until the cheese
begins to melt.

Dipping Sauce:

1/2 C. Sour Cream
1 Tbsp. Prepared Horseraddish
dash Cayenne Pepper
dash Salt
dash black pepper

Combine all ingredients and mix well.

I believe "Aussie" fries are about as Aussie as "French" fries are French. When I was there (mid-eighties) they certainly had no such thing. They had fries (chips) similar to ours but the catchup I had there had a very strong taste of cloves. Fortunately, I had developed a taste for fries with mayonnaise and the mayo they had was fine.

Most memorable thing on the menus in Oz - baked beans on toast or canned spaghetti on toast for breakfast.

We have chips not fries. Must have something to do with our English heritage. I have never eaten chips described in the recipe. Fish and chips or steak, egg and chips or a chip sandwich maybe but never sprinkled with anything apart from salt or tomato sauce(ketchup).

Weird foods...Allthough while growing up we ate alot of creamed corn toast,boiled macaroni W/milk butter,salt pepper...

Allmost like Myth Buster's on TV...So the fries are an American Market Product...Thought so ...While working in Canada years ago...Picked up a good habit...Malt vinegar w/fries or chips...& still a favorite..Shepard's Pie....Found an old program w/150 or so fast food & chain restaurant recipe's...Insiders recipe's for brand name foods...KFC The secret for the 11 herbs & spices,applebee's,boston market, cinnabon etc...Interesting if Your into different recipe's...Not necessarily Authentic to the region it represents...But still Good simple recipe's...

That sounds like a Canadian import from Britain, where salt 'n' vinegar on yer chips/fries is traditional - you also put it on the fried fish in batter that you bought with the chips.....sd.....ffg......rs.....gzdgz.....*#@"!.....¬¬¬¬¬

Well, Joseph…

I was shocked to discover that imediately after meeting my Venezuela wife for the first time down in Caracas, SHE ate fries with mayo. And their hot dog vendors also have mayo as a majorly used condiment. And it's not just Venezuela--it's all over South America.

It still makes me sick after 16 years of marriage to see her dipping those fries in that mayo.

Oooh, that's nasty. Must have been one o' them wine bars (spits, washes out mouth, etc).

Frites avec mayonnaise (frites with mayo) is a (the) national dish of the Belgians, who reckon they invented the frite/chip/fry, and do them rather well.

If you're ever on Rt 1 in lower Maine (Cape Neddick) get your butt into Flo's. Strange hours, but even stranger is the mayo on the dogs. Stranger than that will be your need to evangelize the idea to others.

The Mayo they use on their fries in Holland is actually a mustard and mayo mix. Take some mayo, add a squirt of mustard, mix well and start dipping. Deeliscious!!
