Do I have a groin pull or a hernia?

Postby Ira » Tue Apr 18, 2006 1:35 pm

Okay, ladies. Unless you want to be really titilated…or really disgusted…you may want to exit this thread.

I have to talk to the MEN here.

(Courtney, your dad told me to tell you to LEAVE here right now.)

Since this past Thursday, I've had an ache in the inside, upper-most part of my left thigh. Right in the corner where my thigh and "that" area meet.

The pain is not IN that erotic area, but it's close enough for me to be concerned about this very favorite part of my body (aside from my mouth). It's not killing me all day, I can live with it, it feels like a groin pull…but it hurts on and off in varying degrees and it's definitely affecting how I walk.

Let alone affecting other things my wife may let me do down there, with or without her.

Seriously, is a hernia REALLY painful? Because this isn't horrible; it's just uncomfortable. Also, since I know that a groin pull takes a long time to heal, it was my plan to avoid the SENSIBLE plan of going to a doctor now, and instead, waiting a few weeks to see what happens.

For the price of my co-pay on that visit, i could buy a sheet of formica for my galley.

It's those damn wooden fenders' fault--what with all that sanding at all.

Ira, a hernia you have a burning sensation, mine at first wasn't to uncompfortable but it did get worst where it was really hurting, expectially when your inside was bulging outwards.

Ira--

I am not a doctor. I don't even play one on TV. That being said, did it come on suddenly, such as lifting or running and you suddenly felt the pain, or were you sitting around and noticed the soreness? How long has it been sore? If it is a hernia and you don't go to the doctor you will REALLY regret not paying the co-pay. A hernia will probably get worse and a groin pull will probably get better. When I had my hernias (ages 4 & 7) I don't remember any pain until after the surgery and my big brother was making me laugh. If it were me, I'd bite the bullet, fork over the co-pay, and prepare to turn my head and cough. Good luck!

I helped a delivery guy shlep boxes here last week, so maybe I did something to bring it on. It wasn't like I felt any pain THEN while doing it.

Nothing bulging, except that really small bulge down there that I've always had.

I'm asking all of the girls in the office to check it out for me, but so far, no volunteers.

My hernia was not painful until after the surgery. It was also located a bit higher than what you describe. My guess is groin pull.

Man this is one way of avoiding the doctor. The other way is to buy a gun.

While sitting in a chair, put your hands on your knees and hold them in place. Now try moving your knees in and out using your hands to resist the movenent. If the pain comes back, it is probably a groin pull. That will mean Advil, ice and rest. Hernias are related so you should get it checked out if you are unsure.

Ira,
Last September I had the same symptoms, pain that would come and go. It started on a Sunday evening by Friday I was in tears every time I took a step. Went to the doc and he ruled out a hernia, he thought I tore my groin muscle. He gave me some little pills and some bigger pills and some really big expensive ibuprofen. By Monday I was walking as good as new. I suggest take it slow, I thought I was fine and at the beginning of the year I pulled the other side.

Ira-

I have had 2 hernias (1 right, 1 left) and lower back surgery.

Both hernias protruded downward from the top of my scrotum when I pushed on the area above.

Neither were painful & one was HUGE & old by the time I got it repaired.

Shouldice Hospital in Toronto, Canada IS the place to go. They gaurantee the repairs for LIFE.

http://www.shouldice.com/

The procedure is done under local block & Demerol, you get on the Op table & you get OFF the table after the repair!

JMO & experience...

Cheers,

Coop

Okay--no burning. And based on Steve's experience, it looks like a groin pull.

Who needs doctors when I have TD builders?

Thanks, guys. Time to leave the office now and go home to take care of my groin.

Ira:

Solicitation from arm chair TD doctors will get you this!
:D

Advice:
A doctors words may give one wise man peace
A foolish man who waits more cost than a Formica piece

Prescription:
Pinch the other side in the same place hard so the pain is even.
Then take one of them 800mg tabs of Ibprophen pain pills, spin
around two times, and go sit on the front porch again.
Think long and hard about not helping delivery persons ever again.
As a final fix, make a Tearful vow never to play with your woody again and go forth and sin no more!

I had something much like what you are describing, back in the days when I managed a bar and neeeded to move full 1/2 kegs in the coolers at times. Youchers. Also was riding a motorcycle at the time. Double youchers.

After resisting for a good number of days.......finally went to the doctor after nothing was getting better. She did a quick checkup of the "area", then asked if I had any cuts or abrasions on my body. I lifted my shirt....I had a small nick on my belly, still festering after a couple of weeks (I was ignoring that also). Asked me how I got it......told her it was a kitten getting feisty.

Yep....I had it. Cat scratch fever. The wound, having a hard time healing, was affecting the nearest lymph node. The lymph node was "quite" enlarged due to my failure to acknowledge a problem.

A few days on antibiotics did the trick.

Now, that said and done, have I told you about my kidney stone?

I had a hernia repaired 3 1/2 years ago. I didn't feel any pain at all. One day in the shower I noticed a soft bulge on the left side of my lower abdomen, just above where the pubic hair starts.

I mentioned it to my doctor and asked if it was a hernia during a routine physical. The doc confirmed that's what it was and sent me to a surgeon who fixed me up. I went home the same day (barely able to walk). I was out of work for a week and a half. The worst part of the whole experience was sitting up after the surgery was painful as hell. Basicaly what they did was insert a piece of mesh to reinforce the torn muscle and keep everything inside where it belongs.
