Inverter/Converter question

Postby numumzu » Tue Aug 20, 2013 12:27 pm

I am still in the planning stages of my TD. What size of converter do I need?

I plan to have:

1) 12v Vent Fan
2) Indoor LED light
3) Galley LED light
4) Exterior LED light

Am I missing anything?

I am looking at a Pyramid 10a supply for $75.

thanks,
Alan

Some questions for you:

Do you have an on-board battery?
Have you chosen the fixtures yet? If so can you list the current draw for each lamp/load?
Will you use a computer case fan for ventilation or will you use a Fantastic or similar style fan?
Do you need to charge phone, MP3 player, camera, etc. batteries off the system?

All of these things affect how much current the converter needs to supply, and whether you need a converter or a converter/charger.

Which Pyramid charger do you plan to use? I find dozens. This http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-PS12KX-13 ... B0002JTD1Q. is not suitable for charging a trailer battery, but will supply 12 VDC nominal when you are plugged into shore power.

The more you tell us, the more helpful we can be.

Thanks,

Yes, I plan to use an on board battery. Yes to a vent-a-fan. But 95+% of the use will be with shore power, if I am on battery alone the only draws will be the fan and lights.

I was looking at one very similar to that.

The difficulty I see is that 13.8V will over charge the battery. The Pyramid is meant for gaming.
I would consider a Progressive Dynamics converter.

look up WFCO power inverters/converters. I have used 2 of them in our campers and they work and look great. I used the 35 amp size and is plenty for what we have. The units have both the 12 volt fuse spots and spots to put ac 120 volt breakers. Also has a battery charger built in. If I remember correctly they were $150.

WFCO unfortunately has a poor reputation, do a search on WAFCO problems.

+1 on what Shadow Catcher said. Go with the PD 4045.

+2 on that. My WFCO converter failed, was repaired under warranty, and failed again. I replaced it with a Progressive Dynamics PD4045 (I think). Much better product.
