Arne, I have pulled my weapon on 5 occasions, twice to avoid a robbery and 3 times to avoid a beating...just showing it caused both robbers to flee and firing in the air twice and then leaving while folks were ducking...the two robbery attempts were in Florida and Alabama rest areas while trucking...the other 3 times were a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time...99% of the time there is no need, it is that 1% that I carry for...carrying all the time is a southern/country thing for me...we have always done it and will continue to do so....

I'm afraid of guns, and never had a reason to own one--but that doesn't mean I wouldn't change my mind if something happened to me or mine.

I have no problem with people owning all of the guns they want and shooting all of the animals they want, or shooting bad people, but I hate the gun lobby:

Is making someone wait 72 hours to get a gun, so you can do a background check to see that he's not a criminal or a total nut, is that a BAD thing?

I just don't get it.

As a final note, I lived in New York through the Bernie Goetz saga--the meek, mild guy who shot 4 black "youths" on the subway because he thought he was threatened. The city divided between whites supporting HIM, and blacks supporting these poor unfortunate boys.

After riding the subways for many years, late at night often, I'm sure he WAS threatened. These were 4 animals who needed shooting, yet the lawyers still turned it all around and Bernie came out guilty.
Here we go again!

My licensed carry gun is a Glock 27 in 40 cal.....................and it's most always within reach.......................right where it's supposed to be. Like Madjack, it's been useful on ocassion, though I've never had to do more than produce it. (there's just something about looking directly into a 40 cal barrel!)

Well, then it'd be too late, wouldn't it? Besides, what's to be afraid of? It's an inanimate object. If it's sitting on your kitchen table, it will continue to sit there. It only becomes dangerous when someone picks it up. But then, if you're afraid of it, picking it up would probably make you a danger to yourself and all around you. So please - don't get one. Or if you ever decide to do so, arrange for firearms training first.
I have no problem with people owning all of the guns they want and shooting all of the animals they want, or shooting bad people, but I hate the gun lobby:

Then you hate me, because I consider myself a part of it: they represent me and my interests. I'm a life member of the NRA and donate as much as I can to their Institute for Legislative Action, which is their lobbying arm, on a regular basis. No other organization does as much to protect the 2nd Amendment rights of everyday Americans like myself.
Is making someone wait 72 hours to get a gun, so you can do a background check to see that he's not a criminal or a total nut, is that a BAD thing?

Yes, because it's totally unnecessary. We have an instant check system, which works. During a series of riots in LA, some of Charleton Heston's anti-gun neighbors asked for the loan of a gun because due to the waiting period, they couldn't go buy one. He told them that they wanted the waiting period, now they'd have to live with it.
I just don't get it.

I hope that helps explain it a little.

Exactly why I stay out of NYC.

Been carrying all my life, don't intend to stop any time soon.
I've only had to pull one a couple of times and both times that was all it took, but I wouldn't have had any trouble pulling the trigger if neccesary. I have no desire to do so but..... And carrying a shovel is an excellent idea, saves a lot of paperwork and money. 8)

I saw this bumper sticker somewhere, it's one of my favorites.

Gun Control
The theory that a woman found dead in an alley,
raped and strangled with her pantyhose is somehow
morally superior to a woman explaining to police
how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

I have never needed a gun, and have only used them to kill harmless animals for no reason..... a practice I stopped years ago when I realized how stupid it was.

Where are you from! I know here in Wisconsin the autobody shop people would go out of business without deer. We need to hunt otherwise you wouldn't be able to back out the driveway without hitting one. Deer kill more people a year than any other animal. I don't call that harmless. So I don't believe hunting is stupid.

Besides that they are pretty tastey. If they weren't meant to be eaten they shouldn't be made of meat!

Here in Virginia, Hunters for the Hungry donated 340,173 lbs of venison to needy families last season. I'd hardly call that stupid.

Oops. Once again I probably failed to read the post correctly. If you were killing animals for no reason, then yes - I'd agree that's stupid.

I grew up hunting pheasant and deer. Good eating! I saw a bumper sticker on the door of a big RV that said, "85% of RV owners carry a gun". That's all it said. Didnt' say if THAT RV owner carried, but I'm betting he did.

I once shared an apartment with a friend who had witnessed a double murder. The guy had not gone to trial yet, but was staying in the Gray Bar Motel. My friend went out and bought a .44. I tried to convince him if that murder suspect ever broke in he would have a gun in his hand and there would be no time to run to dig out a gun. Then again, I had my loaded .22 by my bed at all times with a full clip.

My parents spent a year travelling in a trailer. I surprised them with a visit in the middle of the night in Salt Lake City. I thought about using the hidden key to walk in late at night and surprise them. Then I remembered my dad had a .38 and decided I better knock rather than just walking in.

Joseph, if I catch my wife in bed with someone today and can run to Wal-Mart tonight to buy a shotgun, wouldn't it maybe be better if I had to wait the 72 hours to also cool off a little?

Like I said, I have no problem with the ownership of guns and the hunting because I think those ARE everyone's rights--but the NRA and its membership have to meet us a LITTLE in the middle on this, and I think the majority of the membership really wants to. Don't claim to be that well-versed on the subject, but while the gun owners' agenda is to protect their ownership rights, the NRA's only agenda is to sell more guns.

I mean, assault rifles? Where is this going to stop? Are rocket-propelled grenade launchers next?

Also, I don't think the example of the riots is that valid, because in the middle of a major race riot, I doubt Wal-Mart's gun department is gonna be open for business anyway.

We're still keeping this friendly though, right?

Years ago I worked in a little cowboy bar out in Mojave CA. One night a feller that I new come in at closing time, and it was just me, him and my young wife.
Well, he was some kinda drunk so I wouldn't serve him and things started to go south. So he reaches over and pulls me up, and over the bar, and tells me "Rodney I got a gun in my boot, and I feel like using it."
Now my little 5'1" 110 lb wife was standing next to him at the end of the bar right next to a big night stick. She snached that stick up in both hands, drew back on him and said. "Mother F'er by the time you get to that gun, you won't be able to remember why you wanted it." That was 20 some years ago, and I doubt if he can remember his name to this day.
Next day I went out and bought a double barral 410 derringer. It's been in my pocket ever since.
:?
I know its the photographer, and not the camera. I'll keep shooting with a Pentax. Just in case.
