Intro and winter project

Postby wareagle1996 » Wed Sep 11, 2013 12:09 pm

New to forum although have been lurking for a little while. A little about myself,I live in Northwest Indiana currently, my wife and i have been married just short of 20 years, we celebrate that next month. We have 3 children 2boy and 1girl. When the kids were young we had 2 different pop-up campers, but got rid of the last one several years ago becuase of the hassle of setup and lack of time to use it enough. Just recently we purchased a hybrid tt. its is a small one only 12ft box with the beds that drop out of either end. The set up and tear down is quick and easy with it, but while looking for it I started to see teardrops and they really peaked my interest. It has been agreed to that this winter i can take over the garage to build a teardrop that will be used for hunting and for cozy get aways for the wife and I. I really liked the idea of towing one to the land that family hunts and being able to drive down the night before and bunk there without hotel or imposing, it will also allow us to have an extra bed when everyone decides to attend a camp out or trip, between kids and thier significant others or our parents any trip quickly runs out of room. My youngest son(13) and wife are all for the idea and both want to help with the project. Have stated sketching out ideas and just recently started to look for either a used pop-up that can be a donor or a cargo trailer that will meet the need. Figured now is a great time to start looking as people are getting rid of things before the end of the season. Figured once I get the trailer then the real planning will begin as do not know what size until I can get a trailer.

Welcome to the forum. I've been here not too long myself. At this point I can't give much advise. All I've got is a 5x8 trailer I purchased at Northern Tools, plywood floor, and already cut out some of the walls. I did seal the underneath of the trailer last weekend with Herculiner Truckbed paint on liner. These guys are very helpful and understanding. There are great ideas from all of them. Just check their pics in here so you can have an idea. I plan on building mines 120 volts except the trailer lights. Not too familiar with 12 volt camping systems. I'll be installing a window ac unit too. So good luck on your build. That goes for me too.

Welcome, will all of your kids join you while camping or just the youngest? Will you need room for him or just let him have his own tent? These are the questions I asked myself while designing.

With the teardrop it will at most be my youngest while we are out hunting, or just I and the wife. I figured if it will be everyone it would require taking the hybrid travel trailer and possibly the tear for overflow. My wife was wanting me to build one that was big enough for everyone but that would have been a large project and something I did not want to take on for the first one. Even though it would be called the MegaDrop.

Welcome from Southern Indiana. Check out the Midwest Gatherings section. We've got a great group of Tearjerkers here in Indiana. Our Fall Gathering is coming up in your neck of the woods, Potato Creek SP.
