Cool Antique Camper

Postby Corwin C » Mon Sep 23, 2013 9:03 pm

I ran into this a few days ago in a Walmart parking lot ... (apologies for the poor cell phone photos)

I did get some pictures of the inside, but it was just too dark and they didn't turn out. The owner said that it's driveable and campable but it isn't comfortable. The back door is only about 16" wide ... I don't know if I could actually get in or not.

Some day I will get some pictures of my neighbors Model T. He built a WWI ambulance body on it and he drives it all over his farm doing work. I do mean he uses it. Drives it on dusty roads, in the fields. He just looks like he is having way to much fun farming. He has put about 10,000 miles on it the past 2 years.

It looks to be an antique camper with its own private outhouse? :o

Yup ... kinda neat. He claimed to have inherited it from his grandfather and was taking it to car shows (and winning prizes.) The only thing that looked at all recent to me was the porch. There's a bunk over the driver/passenger seat a little wood/coal stove on one side and a table and chair with a woven rope seat (reminded me of a snowshoe) on the other, a braided "rag" rug was on the floor. There was old red longjohns, a galvanized washtub, a big nickel plated "tea kettle" (I would guess 2 gallons or better), and other misc. necessities in the camper. The trailer was a single seat but I didn't notice a catalog (it was dark after all.)

This is not a criticism, just an observation...

I have no doubt that the Model T and the trailer chassis components
[Model T also] are really vintage, but to my eye, it looks more like
it was built in the 1960s-1970s in the "hippie era" when the "Roll Your Own"
bus and truck conversions were in vogue, along with the geodesic domes...

Here's a link to an Amazon listing for the book:

Its design, materials and execution doesn't look like it's from the 1920s-30s era
to me, but more of the 1970s.

It's still a neat little rig, no matter the actual time of build.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

You're probably right Norm, however, looking at the patina on the shakes and other wood parts it's apparent that it has been out in the weather for quite some time in its current configuration. Either that or someone has done some incredibly realistic aging to the wood. The inside was exposed framing and was rough-sawn lumber with a very similar patina. Where there were steel fasteners (nails/bolts), there was an appropriate rust stain. Like I said, it was dark, but I didn't see anything that made it look like a recent build to me. 30 years ... yea, 20 ... maybe, 10 ... I don't think so.
