Used HF Frame (no markings), looking to find weight limit...

Postby Roninmo » Wed Sep 25, 2013 4:23 pm

Any way to find out the weight limit without original markings?

It would take a little reasearch but you could get close. You might check HF web site and find one that meets close to same dimensions, axle, springs and tire size. You can get more info by the springs and tires if you can't find a comparable trailer.

Good luck

Roninmo, Howdy;

You might look at the axel itself, most have a metal tag that is
wrapped around them that has the max. weight the axel will bear
marked on it and who the maker is.

If it is a a HF trailer...

... that has 5 lug 12" wheels and a coupler for a 2" ball, then its probably their "heavy duty" 1720lb capacity trailer (2000lb rated axle and springs).

.... that has 4-lug 12" wheels and a coupler for a 1-7/8" ball, then its their middle weight trailer rated for 1195lb cargo capacity (springs and tires rated around 700lbs each)

.... that has 4-lug 8" wheels and a coupler for a 1-7/8" ball, then its probably their lightest capacity 4x8 trailer, rated for 950lb cargo capacity (springs and tires rated around 600lbs each).

All this is assuming the trailer is all original, and that the previous owner didn't make any upgrades or modifications.

The first test is to check what the tires will carry as the maximum weight of trailer and cargo can't be greater than that. The tires' capacity is molded in the sidewall.

It's possible someone has 'up-tired' or even 'up-wheeled' the trailer but not terribly likely. An d the tires are likely to remain the weakest link in the chain, so if you aren't overloading those, it's unlikely you'll have a problem.
