Toadcharger + solar

Postby Reddiver » Thu Oct 03, 2013 4:20 pm

I am trying to run a cheap window type charger from Harbor Frieght through the same wire that charges from my truck.. When the truck is running toad charge lights up steady power and charging .. If I hook the solar charger although it is putting out 13.5 volts through a solar regulator the lights on ToadCharge flash and you can hear a clicking sound., Not solid like it is from my truck although the voltage is almost the same. Any Ideas

My guess is the power output of the solar panel is too small. You have the voltage, hook it up, it tries to draw more power then the solar panel can provide so the voltage drops, A relay in the Toadcharger drops out, voltage comes back up, repeat.

Just speculation on my part though, I'm not familiar with the Toadcharger.

Our tear has a 185W panel fed through a Morningstar MPPT controller in to the trailer battery it will also back feed into the TV battery and it all plays well together.

Do you have a battery in the circuit?

I am just trying to use the same wire I use when towing . When unhooked I want to plug solar into the wire at the bow of the trailer . I think I am gonna use the wire and get a two pole switch and bypass the ToadCharge box

The solar panel is too small to carry any load to speak of. You need a battery to buffer the load from the panel if you want to turn anything on while you're using it.
