Source for flush-mount door latch/handle?

Postby Oregon Brew » Sun May 05, 2013 11:32 pm

Hi - I'm looking for some kind of door latch that mounts flush to the outside of my cabin door. I've seen products like the one in the picture, and it is exactly what I want, but they are made to fit standard 1 1/4" RV doors, and my door is 1 5/8". Any ideas for alternatives? Thanks in advance!

I've got that exact handle and it's a nice one, but very unforgiving on trying to stuff it into a thicker door and when you do...it's possible to end up getting locked in as the paddle handle will go over it's stop in the handle and there is no way out at that point. I don't know of any others for thicker doors. Your next choice is any handle with a piece of 1/4" square stock in the back. It will go on any door. I just googled up D ring locking handles and found a number of them. They are not paddle handle types however, but they are flush. You'd have to get the interior handle...they don't come in sets. The door lock/latch I used on my TD are the same or very similar to the one you show. I got mine off eBay (in 2006) & I'm pretty sure they were adjustable for use on door thickness from 1.25" to about 2"...

Talk to the manufacturer/distributer. When I got mine, like the ones you show, they are available in a version to fit thicker doors. The paddle lever and lock shaft are longer, as are the fasteners that come with.

I use the same ones. My doors are 1.5" thick. They fit without any problems. At 1 5/8" you will not have any issues making it work. And as said above they fit up to a 2" door. I had to dismantle the lock to fit it to the door. But it went right back together with no issues.

I did it by making two router templates; one for the latch body, and one for the bolt hole in the jamb. Started by including solid blocking in the doors.

Here are some links to my thread where I did a test to make sure the templates were good to go, and also where I cut the actual doors (work is interspersed with other jobs).
Here's how I made the router templates and the test mockup. Some hand work was needed for the final fit.

Looks like from your pic. I should plan on black hinges also...

I am alittle umm particular about my parts matching. They make a chrome handle like mine and I could get those hinges in polished form but polished stainless is not the same as chrome or polished stainless.

That and this thing is going to be shiny enough.
